Sir Elton John has given his permission for his old songs to be reworked and given a dance overhaul.

His back catalogue is to be revamped by acclaimed Australian electronic duo, Pnau.

The act has used up to nine of his songs - all dating from 1970 to 1976 - for their album Good Morning To The Night, to be released in June.

The first cut from the collection was premiered by Pete Tong last month and is called 'Good Morning To the Night' and is a reinterpretation of John's 1972 hit 'Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters'.

Sir Elton is also to play with the group, featuring Nick Littlemore, best known for his work under the name of The Sleepy Jackson and Empire Of The Sun, at a festival in Ibiza in July.

The 65-year-old singer of iconic songs such as Your Song, Sacrifice and Candle In The Wind, said of the project: "I am in awe of what they have done."

Elton John has more than 50 Top 40 hits and nine Number Ones.

He has won six Grammy Awards, four Brits an Academy Award and a golden Globe.

Elton John vs Pnau are storming towards Number 1 according to today's Official Albums Chart Update.

A selection of Elton John’s 1970-1976 classics have been reimagined for summer 2012, courtesy of Australian electronic duo Pnau, the result of which comes in the form of critically acclaimed album Good Morning To The Night.

Pnau saw modest chart success in their native Australia with 2011’s Soft Universe, but have been somewhat ambling in the shadows of frontman Nick Littlemore’s 2009 side project Empire Of The Sun. Until now that is. Elton John reputedly signed the pair after being taken aback with their 2007 track Wild Strawberries, and now with the music icon’s blessings, Elton’s original masters have been unlocked and reworked by the duo with added loops, samples and their own material too, to create a revolutionary new collection of Elton-approved interpretations.

Lifting the UK from gloomy rain, lead track Good Morning To The Night received its first airing on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 recently, and the single now follows in the footsteps of Muse’s Survival to be announced as an official song of the Olympic games.

It’s surely a vanity project for John, an opportunity to flirt with the sound of Ibiza’s youth-soaked terraces before he gears up to release his next solo album. But when daring collaborations are as fruitful as this, we wonder just what eargasms could happen should the likes of Stevie Wonder, David Bowie and – whisper it – Prince take a chance on an electro underdog, too.

Not too dissimilar to when we had Are you ready for love remixed. They are not all complete re-works. Just given a more up to date feel. I quite like some of them.

I downloaded this last night since Pnau features Nick Littlemore, and he's part of Empire of the Sun. Really want to hear a second EOTS album but in the meantime this'll do

Sir Elton John has topped the chart with his first number one album since 1990.

The 65-year-old musician, who has had six previous chart-topping albums, took the top spot with Good Morning To The Night, a collaboration with Australian duo Pnau.

The album, which sees Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes re-imagine Sir Elton's 1970s hits as dance anthems, is his first chart-topper since he released The Very Best Of Elton John in 1990.

Sir Elton signed the duo after listening to their third album, the self-titled Pnau, which was released in 2007.

His last number one single was when Tupac Shakur sampled his 1971 hit Indian Sunset for Ghetto Gospel in 2005.

Sir Elton's Australian collaboration replaces Newton Faulkner, whose album Write It On Your Skin crashed 10 places.
