I'm thinking that they probably held off the story until the actor was ready to return (as he's in a west end show) and just couldn't wait any longer. Sonia's marriage breakdown was pushed aside and it's probably for this.

I think it'll be Michelle Fowler. She's the one who's never returned as the actress isn't interested so I wouldn't be surprised if they've opted for a recast.
