Default Computer Section?

Hi,

First of all well done to the TiBB team for getting the site back up and running, I wonder if it be possible if we would be able to have a computer section for all them problems out there.

Cheers

Well here is my XP problem

2 weeks ago on a Friday Miss Compaq objected to the scanner drawing too much power from the USB port and shut the scanner down.

I was killing the programs off related to the scanner in Task Manager off and tried to shut down from task manager.

For some reason it got to the picture of the hill and then did not continue to shut down (so it seemed) So I had to try the power switch.

On boot up it did not run scan disk, but the shut down seemed to be corrupted. I tried the restore function, and got to the bit where it seemed to refuse to shut down and used the power switch. on boot up the Restore failed and was forever corrupt.

Dixons helpline told me to reformat the entire hard drive (The Nuke option) and start again. The following day (Saturday) discovered it does go through shut down, but it stays on the picture of the hill (or Stonehenge now) for about 1.5 minutes then a further 25-30 seconds to complete the shut down process.

I am told there is a corrupted registry, and Compaq said Nuke option. How ever before this happened I installed a large number of programmes I got from the net, plus all the Microsoft fixes which took over 2 hours.

I would like to fix the shut down so it is back to the quick shut down with out having to do the nuke option.

Hi,

The reason the computer did not run scan disk is because your hard drive is running on a file system called NTFS (New Technology File System), right and about this shut down problem there have been a number of problems with the shut down with win2k and xp, try some of these:

• Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control
Click on the "Control" Folder.
Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it to a value lower than 2000, say 1000 as a test

•Close any antivirus/firewall software down.

• Get latest service pack for windows xp could fix some errors.

• Defrag hard drive(s).

If all fails just chat to me on MSN and i will try and sort it out for you.

Hi,

Again there can be a number of problems that can cause this sort of problem, I my self sometimes have problems loading pages, try some of the things below:

- Make sure you have the most up-to-date Internet Explorer and the service pack (SP1).

- Make sure you download all updates from Windows Update site.

- Clear out your Temporary Internet Files and history.

- Have you tried clicking the refresh button to see if the page loads.

- Try updating your modem drivers.

- It could be your ISP, maybe try another ISP company like freeserve (NOT BT!!!).

If they all fail catch me on my MSN or ICQ and I will investigate some more for you.

The problems with my computer turned out to be a faulty hard drive corrupting everything so I couldnt even format the drive or partition it properly. It's was a fujitsu hd it's now been replaced with a maxtor. Hope to god it doesnt go wrong again I couldnt be doing with all that hassle again.

Splodge and mmal824,

You could try a proxy server.

[gobbledygook]

If you’re using Internet Explorer, go to Internet Options in the Tools menu and click on the Connections tab.

Click on Lan Settings and click on the box next to Use a proxy server.

In the address box enter 213.106.214.10 and in the port box enter 80.

Make sure that Automatically detect settings is not ticked and click OK and OK again.

You might be able to get the Channel 4 site to work now.

If this doesn’t work try 194.202.251.138 port 8080 or 193.128.109.54 port 80

[/gobbledygook]

Sorry people, I’ll try and use the English language in the future.

Hi Bigbrofan....

I am going to have to say no im afraid.

I say this as computers aren't really related to BB at all...

We do have a general chat for non related BB chat though - so people can put there computer problems in there...

- Mark
