Arsenal will make a second attempt to sign out-of-favour Liverpool winger Stewart Downing in January, according to the Daily Mail.

Arsene Wenger attempted to buy the England international as a replacement for Samir Nasri before being outbid by Liverpool - but will now return with a shock £10 million bid.

Downing is not wanted by Brendan Rodgers after a dreadful first season that saw him fail to contribute a single goal or assist following his £20 million move from Aston Villa.

The winger has the technical ability to adapt to Arsenal's style of play and given them balance on the left - while his ability to also play at left-back, which has been Arsenal's problem position, is also a bonus.

Liverpool could ask to include Theo Walcott, who is still stalling on signing a new contract to stay at the Emirates, as part of the deal.
