Tina Fey has confirmed that there are plans to adapt her 2004 film Mean Girls into a musical.

The actress spoke to E! News at the Screen Actors Guild Awards about the possibility of the film being turned into a musical, saying: "Maybe! We want to. I would love to." The 30 Rock star added: "I'm trying to develop it with my husband, who does all the music for 30 Rock and I think Paramount's onboard."

Mean Girls, which Tina Fey wrote and starred in, tells the story of a teenager trying to learn the social nuances of American high school society after being home schooled for most of her life. Based on the non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence it starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams.

Tina Fey recently hosted the 2013 Golden Globes along with Amy Poehler who played McAdams’ mum in Mean Girls and Fey has already hinted at who could take on her role in the musical.

Talking about the recent fight between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj on American Idol over who knew more about Mean Girls Fey said: "I think Mariah won. Like, Mariah seemed to really know all the characters." She then added: "Maybe she can play Amy Poehler's part in the musical."
