Exclamation Meteor fall 'injures hundreds' in central Russia

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21468116

Quote:
A meteor crashing in the Urals of central Russia has reportedly injured at least 400 people, as the shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings.

Most of those hurt suffered minor cuts and bruises but some received head injuries, Russian media report.

A fireball was seen streaking through the sky above the city of Yekaterinburg, followed by loud bangs.

Much of the impact was felt in another city, Chelyabinsk, some 200km (125 miles) to the south.

Officials say a large meteor partially burned up in the lower atmosphere, resulting in fragments falling earthwards.

Thousands of rescue workers have been dispatched to the area to provide help to the injured, the emergencies ministry said.

The Chelyabinsk region, about 1,500km (930 miles) east of Moscow, is home to many factories, a nuclear power plant and the Mayak atomic waste storage and treatment centre.
Out of nowhere .....

Is there a true gamer who can play Asteroids out there, willing to go into space, sit in a triangular space ship, spin at times, and shoot at oncoming rocks?

Seriously, though, that it came down in the Urals and still affected that many people is quite a scare. Happy to see everyone survived.

Asteroids Player Smashes 27-Year-Old High Score (Update)

04.05.10

On Saturday, John McAllister sat down at a friend’s house near Portland, Oregon to play a game of Asteroids. By Monday, he was still playing.

At 10:18 p.m. Pacific, he scored 41,338,740 points, a new all-time high score. In doing so, he beat a record that has stood for over 27 years.

The official Asteroids high score of 41,336,440 is the longest-standing record in gaming history, having been set on November 14, 1982 by 15-year-old Scott Safran. He stayed awake for three days to accomplish this feat.

We'll take anyone at this point, Omah, up you go! Quite a list of records there. Cousins used to have an Asteroids original stand-up arcade in their house back in the 80s, and the rest of us thought is was neat, but a bit much. "We are happy to have heat and water, and you are already bored of playing Asteroids in your home! The nerve..."

The Russian Academy of Sciences estimates that the meteor weighed about 10 tonnes and entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 54,000 km/h (33,000mph).

i don't understand how 950 people could be injured, but no one was killed. I think the definition of "injured" might be a bit loose. What exactly does "injured" mean in this case?
