Watching it with my Dad, really interesting, while it's good to read about these things, actually seeing it happen is very educational.

Loved the Thatcher quote when asked if she was a good butcher, her reply, ''I am not a good butcher but I have had to learn to carve the joint''.

It is very clear that the SDP Liberal alliance harmed Labour more in that election than the Conservatives though.

As for Shirley (she cannot hold a seat) Williams and the others who left Labour but stayed in their seats until the 1983 election, well I would have had no time for any of them,(had I even been born then).
I cannot stand traitors and those who run away from difficulties, had Labour won the 1979 election, hypocrite Williams would have stayed, albeit, a bad cabinet Minister and David Owen, afforded the accolade of being one of the youngest Foreign Secretary's would have been happy to stay too, neither ever raising the issue of electoral reform either.

Watching it, Michael Foot was the wrong leader though and I doubt Labour would have won in 1983 anyway but would have not been as soundly beaten with a different leader.

Odd that the views of Michael Foot and Tony Benn were considered near crackpot ones when in fact their views as to Europe are now very much this Conservative party's near policies as to Europe now and also the objection as to the nuclear deterrent are now very near the Lib Dem policies.
Labour then behind the times as to that or in fact ahead of their time with that thinking.

William Whitelaw came across well, he was also my Dad's favourite Conservative of that time too.
Even then, the Liberals cannot get the first past the post electoral system which is designed to give the single MP for a constituency.
Had to laugh too at the predictions from the SDP and Liberals that Labour was finished with defeated Bill Rodgers saying he would one day be walking into downing street when there was an Alliance Govt.

Utter piffle and they all got what they deserved in my view, especially fifty faced Williams.

I have loved watching this though, fascinated by it.
