Default I saw a little girl get run over today :(

Firstly, she was okay (well, relatively), she didn't die and she didn't have any broken bones from what we could tell, but it was the most horrible heart in mouth moment to watch. Has anyone here ever seen someone be run over? Has anyone hit someone, or been run over? The poor wee girl had Down Syndrome as well, she basically just ran out into traffic and thankfully the driver had ace reactions and braked immediately but she went up onto the bonnet and then onto the road, my friend and I were among the first ones there... the poor wee girl got up, she was crying, and then we realised she had Down Syndrome and she couldn't communicate properly plus she was in shock, she had this picture book she used to point at things etc... but there was no one to be seen who was looking after her, no mum, no dad, no carer, people said they saw her running up and down the pavement for a little while before she ran out onto the road, so it's not like she just ran away from her mum or anything... and this was at half six at night on a Thursday, why was she in town? So concerned... Didn't find out what happened, we were told to back away and nobody needed to stay by the police, my friend had put his jumper over her but she got up and tried to run away because she was scared and luckily there was a special needs teacher there and she was trying to calm her down... I was actually nearly in tears, the guy driving and his girlfriend were crying as well, omg...

It's awful. When I was a kid me and my friend were out on bikes and somebody hit her and she was taken to hospital, and in my last week in NZ my friend got hit by a car and suffered a broken wrist. It's horrible to witness as there is nothing you can do and everything just goes in slow motion and you feel helpless.

At least the little girl was okay, unfortunately that memory won't ever leave your mind nor those poor people in the car.

Zee what a horrible thing to witness, so glad the girl is not seriously injured.
I was knocked down age 5 on a bypass near our house ( I ran away) I'm hypermobile so didn't break anything, just tore a bit.

I know it was such a horrible thud as well, I was convinced she was dead at first, was honestly on the verge of tears, and then when she got up and was trying to run away from everyone because she was scared - I mean I know you get told not to crowd around anyone who's had an accident of some kind, but that was especially important in this case because of her difficulties... and this was rush hour on the high street of Aberdeen during late night shopping, I mean it was absolutely mobbed.

Omg, were you traumatised?? That must have been so scary, do you remember it well?

And yeah GG, I think they're to blame too, I mean it would be one thing if she'd run out and away from whoever was looking after her, but there was nobody there at any point saying they were with her, absolutely mystified as to why she was in town by herself, she must have been like 8 years old or maybe a little bit younger, how are they going to identify who she is if she can't communicate properly? Really hope she's okay and that the driver isn't too shaken up, the guy looked like he'd seen a ghost, obviously he wasn't at fault in any way but that'll stay with him for the rest of his life... just so thankful he had such good reactions!!

Thank goodness she was ok but yea it does sound like a traumatic ordeal.

And kinda puzzling as to why she was on her own in the first place. I think her parents (or who ever was meant to be looking after her) are to blame for what happened to her.

She must have given her parent/carer the slip? poor lass, she was lucky! Like you say well done to the guy it could have been much worse

I do remember odd things, I was told not to go on the rocking horse in the hospital playroom, but it was lovely so I did, I felt ill and got off and it was all bloody
Being told off for giving all the kids on the pre-op ward chocolate too.
I was in hospital 2 months.

That's scary, two months just rehabilitating and stuff?? That must have been awful! Do you remember much about the actual accident? My flatmate's best friend was hit by a car last year, she was crossing at a green man and he came speeding out of nowhere and didn't stop, luckily she's really tall and went over the bonnet rather than under it, she had to get reconstructive surgery on her knee because the knee cap shattered and all the nerves were messed up, she had to learn how to walk again, she's only just managed to successfully squat without needing any assistance... the guy's been sent to jail I think, not actually too sure on details but I'm seeing her on Saturday actually... Just so, so scary to think about. I'm always overly cautious at crossings, my friends always take the piss because I won't cross until the green man flashes, I'm so scared of being run over!

I don't remember being hit, but went under the car and was dragged. Mainly tears and lacerations, and internal injuries. I had to stay in till I didn't pass blood when I went to the loo anymore.

I'm a bit paranoid too, drummed it into the kids to be extra careful

!! That sounds so, so scary, that must be every parent's worst nightmare, no wonder you've drummed it into your kids after it happened to you! I'm so scared for the little girl, how are they going to contact her parents or guardian if she can't even communicate without the use of a picture book? Police and ambulance were there within a minute, luckily the police HQ is just up the road and the ambulance was really speedy too, but she was trying to fight people off and she was covered in blood... aw man, it was horrible

I could be, I don't think I am but it was pretty awful! Think I'll not look at this thread again until tomorrow, try and take my mind off it! I've had such a manic day today as well, so much going on and so much to think about!

I got run over in Year 8, a lot of my friends were run over that year strangely enough.

I've never witnessed someone getting hit by a car though, I cringe whenever I see someone carelessly cross the road. I myself am very nervous crossing roads without crossings. Every Friday I have to go to the Printer's in town and it's located on a set of main roads, and there's literally no crossings around, not a single one. It's quite literally my idea of hell since it's always busy when I have to cross it.
