A railway worker who jumped on to the tracks to rescue a disabled woman could be sacked for breaching health and safety regulations.

The c2c employee allegedly broke ‘strict rules’ forbidding staff from going on the tracks when he and three other people saved the woman.

She was with her carer when she fell 1.2m (4ft) from the platform while strapped into her wheelchair.

Signal staff were alerted while the woman, in her 70s, was hauled to safety. She was taken to hospital with ‘non life-threatening injuries’.

The c2c worker has now been suspended pending an investigation after the rescue at Southend Central station last Wednesday.

One onlooker said: ‘He saved her life but now he might lose his job. It is pretty bad.’

A c2c spokesman said it had ‘strict rules regarding correct safety procedures’. The RMT union said it was ‘fully aware of the incident’ and was consulting its members.

Are we, as a nation, now becoming so health and safety obsessed that we will in-still a fear of reprisal in people of helping others? I think this guy, and the others, should be commended, not persecuted. What would we become if the instinct to help people in impending danger was not there any more? Sometimes I think we are regressing instead of progressing due to the actions of a minority.

I read this in the paper - absolutely mad. They should be rewarded for their actions not slung out of a job. This country has gone mad.
