EDF had to have China money backing them
for this UK project. "PM David Cameron has hailed the UK government agreement with French-owned EDF to build the first new British nuclear power station in 20 years, saying it was a very big day for Britain and would kickstart a new generation of nuclear power in the UK. The energy secretary, Ed Davey, claimed it was a great deal for consumers and would result in energy bills falling by more than £75 by 2030." http://www.theguardian.com/environme...on-hinkley-edf http://news.sky.com/story/1157272/hi...al-to-go-ahead how it may look Life In The Fast Lane Last edited by arista; 21-10-2013 at 10:14 AM. |

How could this ever be hailed as a great deal ?? We are putting the future of our energy needs into the hands of foreign companies whose only desire is to make money out of the British Public.
This is about as obscene as it gets......to allow a foreign company EDF (french) to have sole rights to design, supply, construct & commission a series of New Nuclear power stations using Chinese (Communist) government money, and then allow this company to charge DOUBLE the market rate for electricity for the next 35 years is surely theft by any other name. This has to be investigated and stopped as it is surely fraudulent in the extreme...!!!!

Groundwater radiation levels at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have soared near a tank that leaked 300 tonnes of toxic water in August, struggling operator Tokyo Electric Power said. TEPCO said water samples collected from a well on Thursday contained 400,000 becquerels per litre of beta-ray emitting substances, the highest reading since the nuclear accident was triggered in March 2011. Samples in previous days had been showing levels of just 60 to 90 becquerels per litre. The reading for radioactive tritium also shot up to a record high of 790,000 becquerels, TEPCO said. The leaking storage tank was discovered in August and TEPCO said measures taken since then had included transferring water from the tank and removing the surrounding soil. Fukushima Governor Yuhei Sato (orange helmet) inspects the contaminated water tanks at Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, in Okuma town, Fukushima prefecture, on October 15, 2013 -/Jiji Press/AFP/File Fukushima Governor Yuhei Sato (orange helmet) inspects the contaminated water tanks at Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, in Okuma town, Fukushima prefecture, on October 15, 2013 "Other wells are not showing such a high level. We need to take additional measures for the areas around this well," Masayuki Ono, TEPCO spokesman, told a press conference on Friday evening. TEPCO has removed most of the soil contaminated by the August spill, but might have failed to collect some radioactive materials, Ono said. Heavy rain over recent weeks could have washed contaminated materials into the well, he added, saying TEPCO would remove the toxic soil and groundwater. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited a fishing port in Fukushima Saturday and ate locally caught seafood to showcase its safety. Abe visited a fishing port in Matsukawaura, some 40 kilometres north of the crippled plant, where fishermen are conducting "experimental operations" since last month to catch selected marine species such as octopus that have not been significantly affected by the nuclear accident. "We will give accurate information to the public to erase" economic harm done to the area due to wrong understanding of Fukushima seafood, Abe told local fishermen. "I wish people across Japan will come to know that it is safe and tasty," he said. A huge earthquake and tsunami in 2011 devastated Japan's northeast coast and sparked reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima plant by knocking out its cooling systems. TEPCO, which has come in for growing criticism over its handling of the aftermath of the disaster, has poured thousands of tonnes of water onto the reactors to keep them cool in an ongoing operation. Radioactive water is being stored in around 1,000 tanks but the company has admitted contaminated liquid has made its way into the sea. Tens of thousands of people who were evacuated from the Fukushima region are still unable to return to their homes, with scientists warning some areas will have to be abandoned forever. |

Perhaps then you should be asking the question why are we (UK) not able to build a Nuclear Power station of this type, since we led the World in Designing and Building the first Generation of Atomic Power stations in the late 50's early 60's.
How has Britain fallen so short now that it is unable to muster enough Engineering expertise from within the UK to build these new stations. and why do we need Chinese money since any return on their investment will benefit China and Chinese interests NOT the British Public or Taxpayer...!!!

Actually Jesus's post above contains more than a ring of truth in it, if Utility costs continue to increase at current levels then within ten years it will probably be worth every household (certainly ones in sunny and/or windy areas) investing in its own generator and producing its own electricity from Solar,Wind and burning bio-degradeable waste products ??
People will then need far less electricity from the "Grid" and then as demand falls so will the price much to the dismay of the big energy companies. In the meantime however be prepared to dig ever more deeper into those pockets....!!!!

Why would labour back this madness?
No British company would invest it's too expensive and risky.

And its Not Risky
or Expensive. (not over the time scale) Think of the children of the Future being able to have Lights On. |

The British companies approached both pulled out as it was unworkable, that speaks volumes. Funny how the conservatives feel it's not acceptable to pass on the cost of renewables but it's fine for nuclear?
