A woman died after she fell 80ft from the top floor of a city centre fashion store.

Emergency services were called to Primark on Church Street just after 6pm this evening to reports a woman had fallen from the third floor balcony.

Shocked onlookers and staff ran to the woman, who was found at the bottom of the escalators.
The family of a woman who fell to her death in a city centre clothes store have paid tribute to her.

Susan Wood, 57, died in hospital on Tuesday night after falling 80 feet from the third floor balcony of Primark .

In a statement, her family said: “On behalf of all our mum Susan’s family and friends we just want to say how devastated we are for our tragic loss of a beloved sister to Phil, Tony, Jo, Rob, Si and Keith; a lovely mum to Clare and Hannah; doting nan to Chloe, Caitlin, Daisey and Violet; loving wife to Phil; adored mother-in-law to Gary and Darryl; and fun aunt to all her nieces and nephews.

“Missed already but will forever be loved and remembered. Rest in peace Mum.”

Police said on Wednesday that her death was not being treated as suspicious .

Emergency services were called at about 6pm on Tuesday night after reports a woman had fallen from the third floor balcony inside the shop.

Shocked onlookers and staff ran to the woman, who was found at the bottom of the escalators, and a doctor who happened to be in the store gave her first aid until paramedics arrived.

Shoppers were evacuated and staff were sent home after the incident, but yesterday morning the store reopened for business.

A spokesman for Primark said staff were “extremely saddened” by the incident but that he was unable to comment further on what had happened.

A police spokesman added: “At this time the death is not being treated as suspicious and the matter has been referred to the coroner.”

A post-mortem examination was expected to be carried out either today or Friday and that an inquest was set to be opened after the results were known.

A spokesman for Liverpool council said they were waiting for the results of the police investigation before taking a decision on whether to look in to safety at the store.
