Robbie Rogers, the young lad who came out after quitting football (first time round) was at the Leeds game yesterday.
We are in the year 2013 and still no 'high profile' coming out in professional football. Is it still too early for a high profile footballer to do this? Last edited by Kyle; 22-12-2013 at 08:51 AM. |

its sad but I think its mostly due to the crowds at the games... I mean sure you get your nice accepting supporters, but there's a lot of older/middle aged men who will start to drink and shout things. I'm not saying it's just those types of people who shout abuse... but it's mainly them.
also im sure if a player actually wants to come out, its up to their management who would most likely definitely say no because of all the hate they would likely get its sad but it's true

I'd like to think Wednesday fans are pretty decent in the grand scheme of things but you still get the occasional "pass it ya queer *******" or whenever Brighton come it's always "we can see you holding hands" More needs to be made of it I think, racism is far less rife in football now so football is capable of maturing. |

I think ready as we will ever be in football at the moment, there will be abuse in the stands from opposition fans and maybe their own.I hope someone does it soon but the it's not me who has to handle the abuse is it.It's sad they can't say it, it is none of our business who's gay, who's straight but it would be a good role model for younger people. It must be hard hiding it, especially if you're a high profile player

'Abuse' in the stands is part and parcel of British football. Obviously there is a line and outwardly racist and homophobic chants should not be tolerated on any level.
The atmosphere at the modern game has been dumbed down massively, largely to appease the blue rinse brigade who seem to get up in the morning with the sole purpose of finding something to complain about. In my opinion, in a crowd of 20,000 you would be hard pressed to find more than five people who would find it acceptable to cross the line. Ribbing Brighton fans, for example, by chanting We can see you holding hands. Is harmless. Swansea fans get called sheep shaggers by practically every set of fans in the country, its harmless ribbing. The blue rinse brigade will turn it into a huge issue and shout racism! Its pathetic. I do think the public would be more tolerant these days.
I was on bluemoon (MCFC forum) the other day and somebody joked that one of our players were gay, and they were all 'he can do what the **** he wants as long as he still knows how to defend' You'd still get the odd moronic group chanting 'FAG FAG FAG' or whatever. |

You'll never stamp it out fully there will always be ignorance, especially in a testosterone filled macho posturing environment such as the footie terraces.

I would love to watch a game, that when the striker scores his team mate gives him a full on snog

You only have to look at places like Russia to realise how far attitudes in this country have come since the 70s
