Default Man chops off hand with guillotine and sets it on fire in NHS row

Quote:
*** WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT *** A DESPERATE father sliced off his own hand with a homemade guillotine and then threw the severed limb on a fire.
Spoiler:

Mark Goddard performed the horrific act after doctors refused to amputate his limb despite complaining of pain for 16 years.

The married dad-of-one built the execution device in his garden using two planks of wood, elastic chords and an axe.

After two weeks of testing he placed his wrist under the blade and sliced it clean off.

He then threw the bloody stump onto a fire ensuring it was so badly burnt paramedics and doctors were unable to save it.

And despite the unbelievable self-mutilation Mr Goddard is STILL SUFFERING from the phantom pain.

Spoiler:

BURNE The bloodied stump which was thrown on a fire after being amputated [SWNS]

The 44-year-old from Newton Abbot, Devon, says his pain began 16 years ago because of a motorbike accident but medics have never taken his plight seriously.

He said: "I should not have to go to such extremes to get my pain stopped.

"There was an alternative and that was having it done properly in hospital. But no one would do anything to help me - so I did it myself.

"I got rid of it because they told me they had problems amputating my arm with a good hand on it.

"So I took it off myself and now there is no reason why the can't operate."
Spoiler:

AGONY: Even after slicing his hand off Mr Goddard is still in agony [SWNS]

Mr Goddard is now threatening to remove the rest of his arm if doctors don't do something to help ease his suffering.

He previously tried to use a knife to remove his hand but only managed to slice three tendons and a nerve.

This time he took no chances, spending two weeks designing his guillotine and calculating the force needed to cut right through the limb.

He tied two tourniquets above his forearm to reduce the blood flow and had a first aid kit nearby if anything went wrong.

After ensuring his wife and son were out of the house, he chopped off his limb and made sure it couldn't be reattached by tossing into a fire he lit in a bin in his garden.

It had been burning for 30 minutes before police arrived and kicked over the bin and tried to retrieve it.

Mr Goddard, who used to run his own garage, says he lost two pints of blood but paramedics were able to stabilise his condition.

The former biker hopes he'll now get a more "reasonable hearing" from medics now they can see how determined he is.
He takes 40 painkillers a day but wants a device called a spinal stimulator implanted into his back to ease his pain.

Mr Goddard said: "There should never have been any need for me to do this.

"It would have spared so much distress all round but it was the only way. At least if I do have the treatment it will I need it will give me and my family our lives back.

"I've told them that if nothing is done, I will take the arm off above the elbow myself. I've given them until the end of December."

Mr Goddard insist he has undergone three psychiatric evaluations and passed all three.

He didn't remove the hand to stop the pain - he removed it because the doctors were refusing to remove his arm, which is in constant pain due to nerve damage, because he had a "working hand" attached to that arm. His argument is that now that he no longer has a working hand, they shouldn't have any problems with removing the arm from the elbow down (where the pain is, and always was). I'm assuming the reason that he didn't try to remove his own arm from the elbow down, is that he'd probably have bled to death.

Yeah, trying to remove his arm would've been mental.

Saw this type of problem with the phantom pain on an episode of House, it is a real phenomenon . Their are lots of examples of people losing limbs and still feeling pain from the missing limb. Something to do with how the brain is wired.

It may be that this guy needed to sort out the pain issue prior to chopping his hand off. The fact no doctor advised this type of radical solution suggests the problem was mental not physical.

Hope he doesn't suffer from headaches or I see a new guillotine being built in the garden.
