Default Stupid Cow has started a Petition to Stop a Lidl in Berkhamsted

A Stupid woman has started a Petition
to stop a New Lidl.

But the Lidl will have loads of Flats above it.

The Woman says its not Snobbery
she can not control what people say
on her Online Petition.

She wants a Doctors Surgery and Nursery
but why did she not stop the New M & S Store.

Stupid Cow.

We got the same here arista,we have two supermarkets a Co-op and Waitrose, some of the residents are kicking up a fuss as Sainsburys,Morrisons,Aldi and Lidl have all put in for bid for ground for their supermarket, for me I think it's good to have that choice, some people just never want to move on.

Yeah, I think whether she is or isn't a "stupid cow" sort of depends on the motivation for objecting. If she's objecting to Lidl but wouldn't object if it was another supermarket with less of a "dirty budget shopper" stigma, then yes, it is a bit stupid. However, if she's just objecting to ANY supermarket being placed there, then I don't think it's "stupid" at all, in fact it's completely understandable.

The town I live closest to (not "in" any more... thankfully...) and work in, for example, within the last 15 years has been "flanked" by superstores on all sides (ASDA, Tesco, Morrissons and lower cost stores like Aldi and Lidl, B&M, etc.). Literally surrounded - and all on the edges of town, none really in the town centre. Apparently, this has really drained the life out of the tow and the high street. I can't really say if that's true or not, I've only lived in the area for 3 years, but I can say for certain that the town is a ****hole. So much of a hole that we jumped ship to a prosperous little village nearby as soon as we were able, because whilst I unfortunately have to work there, the thought of sending my children to any of the town's schools sent shivers down my spine. ... ... maybe I am a snob?

Anyway, banging on a bit here... just, whether or not any of that is down to the supermarkets, I couldn't say. But apparently it went downhill long before any talk of recession... and it all coincided with the large stores coming in. Lots of businesses closed within a couple of years. This is a common story in many towns - so... if she's just against "yet another big brand" moving in... then I definitely understand where she's coming from.

It is getting a joke that any spare land is usually bought by the major players in the supermarket wars... just to stop the competition away, even if they don't build.

The amount of time all of the major companies take to develop property is ridiculous. Often, even if they do intend to build, it takes them several years to start (and then it springs up virtually over night).

Was a large empty retail space around here that was bought by Wetherspoons something like 5 YEARS ago... they didn't actually start any sort of work until about 4 months ago. It opened 3 weeks ago. These companies play a long game but in the meantime, we're left with ugly, empty shop fronts and undeveloped, overgrown commercial land.

Is it like student accommodation, they usually have shops under them?

I don't think I would like to live under a supermarket, can you imagine? The noise, the kids, the cars.... untill 9pm or later? no way!

Berkhamstead is really nice. Shame on them for not wanting a big, modern, down-market supermarket slapped in the middle of their town lovely town.
