1,500 chickens killed in lorry crash 'deserve memorial': Animal rights campaigners call for commemoration after M62 accident

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...#ixzz31msMkIcO

Animal rights campaigners have demanded a memorial at the site of a lorry crash which killed around 1,500 chickens.

The HGV hit a motorway central reservation, throwing cages containing about 6,800 birds across a four-lane carriageway.

It is estimated 1,500 chickens died while another 5,000 survived and escaped into nearby fields.

Do you think a memorial is a good idea?

No I don't think a memorial is a good idea. But I do think that a rethink is overdue about the way we transport animals.

No, transport them in a humane way. In fact don't just transport them in a humane way, raise them that way too. No more battery farms, make people pay a little more for ethically reared meat.

I understand that. But do you think that ethically reared animals are then packed into cages and transported like intensely farmed battery chickens? No, of course they're not! You pay more for ethically reared meat because it's not only reared ethically but transported ethically. Obviously. At least the suppliers that I support do.

I don't eat foreign meat, so would never support European or Asian methods. When I was in India I ate vegetarian only. I'm very particular about what I eat.

Even ethically reared meat needs transporting for processing... should we teach them to fly?

supply and demand, if people want KFC, mac Ds, 10 chicken burgers for a quid then this is the only way to keep costs down... the solution? Don't buy rubbish..boycott it, will that happen here? No.
People have less and less disposable income so are buying cheaper and cheaper cuts of meat and packaged products, expecting those with nothing to think ethically is a big ask.

I agree. I tend to eat free range chicken / eggs and grass fed red meats, although admittedly mainly because it tastes better, but the price difference amounts to more than "a little bit" more - it can easily be double the price, or more, than the factory farmed cheap stuff.

Expecting people who are struggling with keeping their home heated to feel concern for the living conditions of Chickens... Is a bit of a joke really. Switching cheap meat for free range could easily bump up an average weekly shopping bill by Ł10... Ł45 a month... Ł45 a month extra to stick on your gas direct debit makes a huge difference. It's the difference between worrying about a few hours extra heating in winter to keep your kids warm, and suffering the cold (and the damp that it causes), for many families. That said - it's shameful that that's a concern in the first place.

It takes less time to make a sarnie than it does to queue for a burger.

Err... I think this is probably medically dubious .

Scratch that, I'm 100% sure it's nonsense. If you want energy to get you through the day, fast food is the last thing you want... It'll make you lethargic.

Ideally you should eat something light but high energy, like nuts, a high protein salad or fruit.

Loading up on starchy fast food carbs at lunch time is an awful idea.

The hot food you get at fast food venues isn't going to give you energy for the day...

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy fast food every now and then (OK, OK... We end up in KFC every Wednesday night after my daughter's dance class...) but it's not "good fuel" for a working body / mind. I'd never have fast food for lunch. Raw nuts would be a much better "life in the fast lane" choice. Preparation time: zero!
