He was wrong to hire him but he acted in good faith as to what Andy Coulson told him or in this case didn't tell him.
It is a question of judgement on David Cameron's behalf, and many things he has done since the start of his premiership do leave a lot to be desired as to how good his judgement in lots of areas are. However way back,I said here on tibb too, something like, I admired the way David Cameron stood by him and that he wasn't prepared to judge Andy Coulson or comment until likely something was proven against him. Now it has been proven, David Cameron has immediately apologised, so to be fair to him, that is,in my opinion, all to David Cameron's credit. Last edited by joeysteele; 24-06-2014 at 06:44 PM. |

However in light of that it seems to me to be beyond belief as to her position in the newspaper industry that she couldn't have known whatw as going on and/or that she even approved of same. Since the acceptance has to be that she is not guilty then the only other rational conclusion has to be that she was grossly incompetent at all she was supposed to be doing as to her job not to know. Clearly she either was grossly incompetent or just plain lazy and took little or no interest in her position at all. Hopefully that will be remembered should she ever try to return to the media industry. Hopefully she will never be given great responsibility again. |

I agree with you to a point Joey, however I feel at the time although Andy Coulson was not charged or implicated in anything he was connected to the problem in the NOTW and could be drawn into it at a later date. For this reason the PM was advised by more than one advisor not to hire him as it could blow up in his face at a later date. He ignored that good advice and went ahead and hired him anyway. Now he has to apologise (again) and have his judgement questioned once more. In my opinion this is damaging to the Prime Minister whichever way he tries to deflect criticism.

There is no doubt at all that this will damage the PM as to his judgement, this was one of his first decisions to appoint Andy Coulson. This will inevitably cause massive embarrassment to him, that cannot be denied. Other politicians do,I think, need to be wary though of too much attack on this as their judgements will come into question in the future probably too. I still admired that he wouldn't condemn until criminal acts were proven but he will have an almighty storm to ride through as to this now. I also have to add too, this will be milked for all it is worth and more by Ed Miliband and even other parties likely too. However were this on the other foot and this were Gordon Brown still as PM or Ed Miliband in this position now, then David Cameron and his opposition would be also milking it for all it was worth in that scenario. Such is, sadly, current politics. |

Yes, I agree the PM did appear admirable in sticking to his guns re not condemning Mr Coulson at the time but as the PM must be seen to be whiter than white this was always a gamble, one which I now think has backfired on him. It is a shame also as you point out that Politicians now look for any reason to score political capital over their opposite numbers. Sometimes the business of running the Country has to wait because politicians are too involved in playing their little games. 21st Century Politics I guess....
