Do those teachers ACTUALLY exist? Rich people love to throw around that story of teachers told me you are a failure. I know teachers have favorites and ones they are more willing to help but those that actually say you are a failure where are they and why are they never reported?

..sadly I think yes, but not those exact words maybe ..equally though showing a child a lack of belief...they didn't expect any better of them..?..more that type thing..then that's what the child will believe..they are sometimes reported but I'm sure not always...

It's more like "sort your life out or you will fail". I got that threw at me a lot and I have the ultimate respect for him, because he didn't relax until I did.

..it does depend not only on what's said but the context it's said as to whether it will motivate or deflate...and whether it's coming from a teacher/mentor who is frustrated because they actually do believe in that child and know their capabilities and want them to realise those themselves...

I've had a few that've said "If you don't get your ideas together you're going to fail" type thing, but not directly calling anyone a failure.

I think it can bring out the defiant fighting spirit in some, it's sometimes better for lads than the nicey nicey approach.
I heard male teacher say it to lads in school, not in a totally negative way, more as a challenge.

One of my Brother's teachers was a horror, always saying awful things. One thing that sticks in my mind was when he told his class that they were "dole queue fodder". A harsh thing to say to kids in an inner-city comprehensive. My brother now earns considerably more than a secondary school teacher and has great job satisfaction while that same teacher's probably still spouting his bile and watching enviously as the kids he's supposed to be inspiring, step over him.

^what? That's awful and unacceptable. If a teacher said that to my child I would complain. I understand that tough talking can be a great motivater but there is a way to do it that doesn't come off as just putting someone down and taking the belief out of them. Some people aren't tough enough to take on tough talking as a challenge and it will just tear them apart and they'll believe they won't amount to much.
If those teachers are so unhappy, leave, don't take your anger out on kids. ![]()

Yes they do.
My history teacher constantly made remarks like "....when you see your friends driving down the street in a nice car and you're waiting to catch the bus" it wasn't an if you don't buck up your ideas either he reminded me how I would be expelled "just like your sister". I still seriously dont know what the problem was, may have been his alcohol consumption speaking. My careers advisor also hand posted an application form for McDonalds through my door after I had finished my GCSE's. Still cant believe that happened I actually really liked her lol.
