Err... "a few" don't "always" die? Occasionally there are deaths but certainly not every year. I think the course is already less brutal than it was once upon a time. It is quite gruesome when you see the camera pan over and there's a big lump lying under a sheet of plastic...

Those horses are some of the best cared for, best fed animals in the world. No one wants horses to die, and I expect the owners, trainers and jockeys feel the same. If the horses didn't want to run, they wouldn't. You'll notice when a jockey falls, most of the time the horse goes on to finish the race. I think there are many worthy animal welfare concerns, but that this isn't one of them.

The problem with valuable horses is, they only have to take a minor injury that could be problematic in the future for them to get the bullet. Horse racing is about big money and when someone who owns a valuable horse, if it takes an injury its more valuable dead that alive. Over the years I've seen too many unscrupulous vets write off a valuable animal far too quickly to ensure its owner gets fully compensated.

Race horses only lead a decent life whilst they can still race. Most are backed at two which is far too young and causes all sorts of future arthritic problems. Once a horse is deemed unfit for racing or like most of the youngsters, is written off as a none runner, it will either be sent to the abattoir or sold off for pocket money into the hands of some naive amateur who won't be able to handle it. Occasionally it will end up in good hands but not often. If its done well but ready to retire, it will be used at stud or sold on to the more amateur racing yards. Very few retired race horses are kept by their owners.

I've worked with horses most of my life, I've even worked for racing studs and I can say categorically that life for most race horses is usually short and merciless.

I've ridden race horses many times during the bringing up and letting down process. I would definitely say that these animals love the chase regardless of being racing fit. This is especially true when they are running with the herd, as they are within the racing arena. As for the GN steeplechase, its the most ultimate test for both horse and jockey because of the pure volume of runners hitting those fences at the same time. You only have to look at any still of horses going over Becher's Brook to see the fear on its face.

My daughter is hugely anti-Grand National. This is very similar to the argument I give to her. Note, when Marco Simoncelli died in MotoGP (someone I actually knew) she wasn't half as emotive as she is about the horses.

They don't, but it's what they are bred and trained for. They'll usually complete the course when they unseat. I know it's impossible to say whether or not they enjoy it, but in my experience (mostly with eventing, I admit), if they don't want to, they won't.

Opens up a whole can of worms I think as to whether horseracing / eventing / jumping / anything to do with equine sport can be justified. I think it can.

I'm a bit traumatised by this race if I'm honest, it was always on as a girl every year and it was horrendous watching them falling, I'm very glad they have made the course safer.

Yes animal safety should be considered more imo. If its a known thing that horses can die doing this surely that's a wake up call.

People die in formula 1 and bike racing too; and it's made safer after every time it happens, It's the same in the Grand National.
