100% the parents fault
I can completely understand why a person living in America would want to keep a gun in their home. But what I don't understand is why people don't keep these guns, completely hidden and out of reach from children... This was easily preventable... R.I.P to that poor baby and my thoughts are with the child who accidentally killed them. Its something they will have to live with for the rest of their life.

....jeez, how truly awful for both parents..I'm not sure that charging anyone in this would have any value, it's tragic and pointless enough without adding to that I any way...just so terribly sad...

'An unattended gun'
Words that should never be read tbh. I feel heart sorry for both these kids, the little soul that died and the one that now has to live with what happened for the rest of their life. Last edited by Josy; 13-04-2015 at 07:51 AM. |

It could just as easily have been one child knocking over the TV set onto another child. This was 100% an accident. has very little to do with guns and very much to do with parental supervision. very tragic.

How many children die from drowning every year because their parents weren't watching? it has nothing to do with guns, it has everything to do with parents NOT MINDING THEIR CHILDREN.

If the gun wasn't left within the reach of a child we wouldn't be having this conversation. Accidents are accidents yes but this is severe neglect.

It's neglect all right - 'CRIMINAL NEGLECT'. ANY adult STUPID enough to leave a LOADED gun with the safety off in a position where a child can access it SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO OWN A GUN IN THE FIRST PLACE.
If they had LEGAL entitlement to have a gun in the house then it's time that the relevant licensing authorities started incorporating mandatory INTELLIGENCE TESTS and PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILING ASSESSMENTS in their criterion for issuing licences. Yes - accidents DO happen within the home, and sometimes those accidents DO involve ordinary, everyday household objects such as electric or gas fires, or boiling pans and kettles etc, but a GUN is NOT an ordinary everyday household object. A gun is not even like a sharp KITCHEN KNIFE which may be being used in food preparation in the kitchen and put down absent-mindedly in a position accessible to a child when the phone rings or when the person using the knife breaks off to answer the door etc. A GUN is a GUN and NOT something which should be handled or used everyday, so what possible reason can there be for a LOADED GUN with THE SAFETY OFF being left unattended in a position where a child can ACCESS it? If it was being cleaned, then why was it LOADED? What was the IDIOT who left it where the child could take it actually DOING WITH IT? ADMIRING IT? LOOKING IN THE MIRROR while he pretended to be JOHN WAYNE and practising his QUICK DRAW, then left it on the sofa while he went for a jog? I know that this is a tragedy for all concerned - none more than the innocent little baby and his brother - but there is a very real danger that if there is not a 'no holds barred' inquest at least, that this could set a precedent somewhere down the line', for perverse, evil parents or step-parent, or 'live in boyfriend', to murder a child with the confidence that a tiny brother or sister can be blamed, and the pretence of 'accidentally leaving a loaded gun with the safety off where the child could take it' will be accepted without question or punishment. Fecking sickening - Poor kids. |

Yes, a TV could fall on a child and hurt them, but it's actually very unlikely that it would kill them. Even a sharp knife, a minor injury is more likely than death, but even leaving knives in reach of a toddler is madness. But come on. A loaded gun ready to fire, where a toddler can access it? The likelihood of someone being injured or killed is sky high. It's not even in the same ballpark... In fact Not even in the same area code... As leaving a child around a normal room with potential hazards like heavy objects. |

Exactly. Even out of reach of kids. When a gun isn't in the hands of its owner, it shouldn't be loaded, and the clip shouldn't be kept in the same place as the gun. Getting both parts and loading the gun should have to be a very deliberate act.

Can anyone even begin to imagine the years of psychological torment that poor toddler is going to have to endure.
Stupid Parents, this is not an accident , this is 2nd or 3rd Degree Murder by the parent who left a loaded gun next to two little children. Beyond Belief......

I hope everyone here realizes that i am not pro-gun at all, but i think accidents by children with guns is not really relevant to the debate about gun rights. i'm much more worried about adults with guns, adults that know exactly what they are doing with them.

The parents should face charges, If America is unwilling to tighten gun control then they should at least enforce regulations on how guns are kept and handled. A gun should never be left out in the open and it should never be in reach of a child.
