Default Is there such a thing as 'acting gay'?

Whilst people are celebrating Ireland becoming the first country to legalize a basic human right that all should of been entitled to, I couldn't help but go over in my mind as to why people act 'gay'.

Can you act gay? Is there such a thing as acting gay?

We all know what a stereotypical gay man is. We don't need to dwell on that, but are people actually really like that, or do they play up to what society should think they should act like?

E.g. When i first came out, i felt as though i needed to act a certain way - i needed to be surrounded by girls, straighten my hair, talk with extended words, go shopping, talk about boys - It's only as I've gotten older that I've realized that my true self is none of those things, and that i was acting like what i grew up thinking being gay was about. 'I love gay people' said all my friends at school. HOW? LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, WE'RE ALL DIFFERENT. I HATE shopping, girls annoy me, i fart in front of people, i dress and talk and LOOK like a man. I may talk slightly feminine (because i don't deliberately deepen my voice and say mate after every word) but my mannerisms are 'manly' because i am a MAN.

Like most other gay men - I have never worn fake tan, i have never had my eyebrows done, i have never really worried about my appearance to the point where i have to buy expensive clothes or gadgets to make up for it. So why is this a gay stereotype?

Your thoughts?
Do people play up to the stereotype, or is it just who they are?
(Louie Spence, That bald ***** that got booted out on launch, Aaron)

I agree.
But is it put on because that's what society has made us out to be? Or are people just genuinely like that.

I think to an extent with people like Aaron they overplay the persona for attention. They need to be the loudest in the room and get all loud and boisterous.

But the general feminine mannerisms, their voice, their walk or whatever else is just them.

Whenever I think of that phrase I imagine an 'are you being served' type character, is that the same as 'camp'? (I don't know where that word comes from btw hope it's not offensive)

But why would you call it acting gay?
you just said yourself its only OTT that would make you think that, which is a very small percentage.

I always had a theory that some gay men grow up around straight men who they are naturally attracted to and attempt to alter themselves to be more like the women that the straight men are attracted to, the theory works for the 'butch' lesbians too.

Then again, it could be the complete opposite to this as some gay men just may want to distance themselves from what they think a straight man acts like as they might struggle to identify with the most of them.

I don't really know why 'acting gay' is a thing, but you're right.. Say the words 'acting gay' to pretty much anybody in Britain and they will immediately think of somebody similar to Louis Spence.. Which is a shame and almost damaging.. Cos he's a bellend and not anywhere close to reflective to the majority of the community.

I don't think 'acting gay' is innate or genetic anyway, I'd probably assume its down to some nurture influences like the media or Britains heavily sexualised society. There is a gay culture in Britain and culture can heavily influence any single person. Take a place in central Africa or western Asia and I'm sure 'acting gay' would have little meaning other than secretive same sex intercourse.

I remember when i realised after a long time that Radio 1 dj Scott Mills was gay

I was like "eh, how did I not know this?"

I think as I had never really met many gay people (i prob had but did not know) and i was perplexed as I had kind of thought all gay men were like Alan Carr.

Now i just think you can spot a gay man as they are always better dressed than a straight man

For me, the simple truth is - that like so-called 'straight' people (a misnomer if ever there was one) there are an infinite number of different 'types' of 'Gay' person and all of them perfectly valid.

People like Liberace, Larry Grayson, John Inman and Louis Spence are 'celebrities' who exaggerate their 'campness' for 'show-business' reasons, but there ARE genuinely OTT camp gays just like them in real life because I know some. Their OTT campness is definitely NOT 'put on' - they ARE like that in real life 24/7 in public or in private.

Then at both extreme ends of the scale are the rippling muscled/heavily mustachioed gay males who we used to call 'Clone-Zoners' - visually 1,000% macho manliness but really 2,000% gay - and the 'Queens' and 'Little Dollies' who wear make up and look ultra feminine but remain physically male.

In between, of course - as in the 'straight' world - are a diverse array of gay people - some who appear and sound as straight as can be, which they are of course, apart from their sexuality.

I know lots of very, very, handsome, 'ripped' bodied males who straight women just cannot believe or accept are gay because they don't 'talk' or 'act' gay, and are 'too hunky' to be gay.

I don't think it matters a jot, really. We are who we are and what we are, and it's only HOW we are that matters.

p.s - I believe that the term: 'Camp' hailed from the soldiers in WW2 'Concert Parties' (It Ain't Half Hot Mum' style) who entertained the troops and often dressed in make up and drag. 'Camp Concert Party'.

Yup..when my mate came out at 15..he suddenly became all feminine and seriously camp...for about 3 months, then went back to how he normally acted. Felt he had to act all flouncy and stuff as thats what most gay guys do.

I'm not sure its 'most' gay guys, but a lot of it does seem extremely put on, especially when they have a change of personality overnight tbh
