Default How clever are you?

I found these posted up on another board I look at occasionally:

Below are 4 questions. Answer them instantly. You can't take your time.

Answer them immediately. No pencil or paper! OK? Let's find out just how smart and clever you really are. Ready? ... GO!!!

FIRST QUESTION
You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

ANSWER
If you answer that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!

To answer the second question, don't take as much time as you took for the first question. (You know you took too much time.)

SECOND QUESTION
If you overtake the last person, then you are...?

ANSWER
If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?!

THIRD QUESTION
Very tricky math! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it.

Now add another 1000.

Now add 30.

Add another 1000.

Now add 20.

Now add another 1000.

Now add 10.

What is the total?

ANSWER
Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100. Don't believe it? Check with your calculator! Today is definitely not your day. Maybe you will get the last question right?

LAST QUESTION
Mary's father has five daughters: Nana, Nene, Nini, Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

ANSWER
Nunu? Nana? Nene? NONO! Of course not. The fifth daughter's name is Mary. Read the question again.

To make you all feel better, I got all these wrong too!!!

Pleased to say I answered the third and fourth question correctly.

Not the first two though.

Well PPP I got the maths question wrong, but then I always add figures up with a calculator and if I get the same answer twice then that is definitely RIGHT.

Got the others right though so quite proud of that.

I kept trying to do this and kept getting 5000 and i couldnt work out how i was doing it wrong. I think that has something to do with you add up the first 7 numbers and you get 4090. It then says add 10 and your brain skips and thinks this makes 5,000 when in fact it is only 4100

It's a good job sweetlittlesarah put in a written explanation or I would STILL be wondering wh it didn't add up to 5000.

I got the first question wrong.

I probably then guessed the tricks they were using because I got the next two right.

Then I must have gotten over-confident though because I got the last one wrong.

Here's another game to test your mental abilities. Apparently it's based on a scene from the film Rainman.

I got about 7 hundred and something the other night.

Well done for 700 James, that's a lot harder than it looks!

Great game, James.

I agree, Feebs - it's definitely harder than it looks.

Probably due more to inspired guesswork than anything else, I got 908 tonight.

I got 831 but it was, of course, sheer guess work. As you've said, it's a lot harder than it looks and surely relies on luck more than anything.
