Default PM Hails Historic Nuclear Deal With China & EDF: Over 20,000 new jobs

[China has signed a deal with French
energy giant EDF that paves the
way for Britain's first nuclear power plant
in a generation.
The investment by Beijing in the new
site at Hinkley Point in Somerset,
was confirmed as part of a raft of
agreements the Government hopes
will amount to about £30bn.
State-owned
China General Nuclear Power Corporation
(CGN) will have a 33.5% stake
in Hinkley Point C,

with the rest held by EDF UK.]

Sigh.

It's at least less polluting than other options, and it creates jobs.. but nuclear is not the route we should be going down.

What's the point in Trident? Didn't Cameron say, 'China could be our biggest threat' when he was fighting the Trident campaign?

I'm with Josh, the last thing we need is the most expensive nuclear power station the world has ever seen. We are an Island surrounded by water ffs; the wind is our friend. All that crap about 20,000 jobs. What about all those in the wind turbine and solar industries that are now going to find their companies crashing?

What's next? The Chinese air force to take over RAF Brize Norton? This government is a bunch of bandits dressed as gentlemen.

Lets hope the UK in the future does not end up regretting this great new venture.

And I doubt that 37% are singing and dancing about this. Every conservative thinking person I've spoken to so far are just as horrified as me.

I think for the moment nuclear power is needed. When we get to a stage where we can properly and reliably harness the weather without the need for thousands of wind turbines scattered around then nuclear power may not be needed but should always be there as a back up.Some beaches and parts of the country have already been ruined by these turbines. The tech just is'nt here yet to be reliant on the weather yet.

If we're cutting it down to percentages, let's not forget that four out of ten people couldn't be bothered to get off their arse and actually vote in the last general election. If they had the result might have been different. But they didn't.

The Conservatives won the last election mainly because 4 in 10 people didn't turn out to vote. I'd say that's far from irrelevant. You get the government you deserve.

They won by lying in their manifesto in truth, but I don't want to derail the thread.

It's not the first time a political party hasn't followed through on their manifesto, is it. I mean, most people aren't stupid, they know that there's a certain amount of spin and skulduggery attached to politics, and we'd already had five years of the Tories, if they'd done so badly you'd think those eligible to vote would have done so, instead people make excuses for them. Again... you get the government you deserve.
