Default Britain is running out of painters and decorators

Britain faces a shortage of tens of thousands of painters and decorators putting in doubt government efforts to build a million new homes in the next five years, it was claimed yesterday.
There are up to 33,000 too few craftsmen in London & the South East alone, a report said.

It said this could threaten Chancellor George Osborne’s pledge to address Britain’s chronic housing shortage by building one million homes between now and 2020.

The Chancellor announced an overhaul of planning laws earlier this month in a bid to speed up housebuilding projects.

I think a lot of people cant afford a decorator so try and do most of it themselves.

My mum painted/wallpapered all of our house.

My dad came a couple of years ago and decorated one wall in my bedroom and it looks superb, better the professional.

Only thing we had painted by a decorator was the hallways and landing because of the difficulty.

Well, we have plenty of capable people on the dole, let the government offer them some training schemes.

We have painters and decorators in once every year or two as my mum often gets bored with a certain look and likes something new after not long

Problem is a lot of people don't want to do manual work, they all want to be celebs or pop stars or footballers

I think this is referring to painters and decorators who finish off new builds rather than those who work for people who don't know how to work a paintbrush.

This would actually be a really good idea. Offer free training schemes and whatnot, plus since there is a big shortage the pay would probably be pretty good.

their is a generation of school leavers who have no confidence or will power, because the government pissed all over them with no jobs or fair pay, for many its life on the dole for them, its been like that for a long time now.

I agree, It sounds like a cop out to me...we can't build houses because nobody knows how to manipulate a paintbrush? pffft!
