Default Studio directors blog

Following various media reports over the past few days, I just wanted to clarify a few points about how we edit together Strictly Come Dancing - The Results each week.

It is first worth noting that our annual visit to Blackpool is always a special moment in the series. The iconic ballroom in Blackpool provides us with a sensational and unique setting and our viewers would have noticed that as well as the inclusion of extra dancers in each routine, our props department up their game too making an extra effort to make each dance as spectacular as it can be.

Of course the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool is not a TV Studio, therefore recording the Results show does present extra logistical challenges for us and does take a little longer to tape than when we are at our purpose built facility back in Elstree.

Peter and Janette’s routine last weekend had a 60’s theme where we recreated a TV Studio on the dancefloor. Following their routine in the dance off they received a spontaneous standing ovation from the audience as you can see in the clip below. Their set included a purpose built stage which had to be pieced together in separate segments. The stage was complemented by four decorative hanging pieces which needed to be winched to and from the overhead support rail above the ballroom floor. In real time, all of this activity took around 3 to 4 minutes to dismantle before the area was clear and our dancers were able to take their positions for the judge’s decision to be filmed.

As there are only a finite number of cameras at our disposal and we had to have some additional shots to be able to edit together the final show, we used this 3-4 minute window to film shots which do not focus on the dancefloor itself. In this time we captured a few additional close ups of the audience. In these shots the audience did exactly what they did when Peter finished his dance off routine which was to give him and Janette a standing ovation.

Gathering extra shots of the audience clapping etc is par for the course on shows of this nature and this is something we do every week. The key point is that these shots are representative of what happened following Peter and Janette’s dance off. For the avoidance of doubt, you can see in the following clip the wide shot of the studio, which shows the studio audience giving Peter and Janette a spontaneous standing ovation immediately following their dance off routine:
