Aren't the demographics a lot more even now than they used to be? (I might be wrong about that but I'm sure I heard that the number of female gamers is higher than it's ever been.) If it's true, it might be a good idea for game manufacturers to cash in on that market... with batmans ass.

It's a matter of target audiences and the fact that men and women typically have different tastes when it comes to attraction.

Most games are aimed at straight males, men typically have simpler tastes when it comes to what they find attractive. You can stick a woman in an armoured bikini and get the desired effect from a male audience but you can't stick a man in a male equivalent of that outfit and hope to get the same reaction from women. I can only think of a few sexualised male characters and they all tend to be sexualised in more subtle ways than the female characters.

The only way these things will change is if the audience changes and that's not likely to happen really.

That's more of a power fantasy though, look at Kratos in the God of War games, he usually just wears a loin cloth but is he meant to be seen as a sexual object? No, he's meant to be a badass that goes around ripping things apart and making you feel like a god for it. Men are designed to be walking talking constructs of masculinity and a lot of female characters are designed to be eye candy first and foremost.

It's not something I have a problem with really, it's the developer's choice to do that, it's their art. I do admit it bugs me when people try to make out that there's an equal balance between the genders and their representation because there isn't as gaming is a male dominated hobby, most games are made for men first and foremost. That's just the way it is. Female gamers aren't as desirable as an audience as males because there's simply more male gamers out there.

True but while the male characters can be seen as exaggerated examples of masculinity, couldn't the female characters likewise be described as exaggerated examples of femininity? The prominent features of each gender are cartoonised and blown out of proportion... And at the end of the day, the effect of that is in the eye of the beholder. Not that they don't do it for a reason, and I'll admit they often hypersexualise female characters in other ways (how they move, what they say, how they say it) BUT if you're talking about just the models, in a purely detached way, all that has happened is that the prominent physical features of each have been focused on. It is the viewer that perceives the effect as a sexual one.

There's a pretty simple reason for that. The female form is genuinely sexualised by nature. Literally by evolution. The female body (sorry girls) is designed to be sexually attractive, to mate, to incubate offspring, birth them, and nurture them. Hips and boobs.

The male body is evolutionarily designed to further it's own genes by fending off other males and therefore, is evolved for physical aggression: Upper bodies and arms.

It might not be PC but you can't fight nature ... And I'm not sure what's supposedly wrong with entertainment being aesthetically pleasing (for either sex).

I think it's surely far more offensive when female characters are made weak or subordinate... And when that happens, they usually aren't sexualised at all.
