Here is another Arisa interview from the BBCAN website:
Quote:
Big Brother Canada returns Wednesday night and so does series host, Arisa Cox. Just days before the big reveal and premiere, Arisa shares her thoughts about the continued success of the series, her favourite twist and what her kids think of her hosting Big Brother Canada.
John Powell: What does it feel like to be back for a new season of Big Brother Canada?
Arisa Cox: We are absolutely thrilled to be back for Season Four! In the grand scheme of things, Big Brother is all over the world and we are still the new kids on the block so it is so great to be back for another season to just keep elevating the game, to keep evolving, and to keep trying new things.
John Powell: What do you attribute Big Brother’s popularity and success in Canada to?
Arisa Cox: I think it is because as Canadians we are very passionate about the country we live in. If you are into a scripted drama, that’s cool, that can be awesome, but our show has Canadians taking part. You also don’t know what is going to happen with each episode. It is not as predictable as an hour-long drama can be. On top of all of that, there are so many ways to experience our show. The main show is on three hours a week and then we have the Side Show, and then we have the free live feeds on our site and then we have After Dark every night. There are just so many ways to go hard-core fan crazy.
John Powell: You must be proud that not only does the series have strong women but, as you mentioned, such a diverse cast of Canadians.
Arisa Cox: As Canadians, we are so used to seeing so many different walks of life and we really take pride in our diversity - it is one of the great strengths of our show. You are absolutely right about the strong women too. These women have depth and they have strength and they have respect for themselves. They are the things that make me very excited as a mother of a daughter and a son, who I want to see these types of women on camera.
John Powell: You have mentioned your children; do they watch you on the show? What kind of reaction do they have?
Arisa Cox: My kids are quite young, they are four and six. So, they don’t watch the show but they have seen me flip by it on television (laughs) - it is really cute. They will say "Mom, that’s your show! ...can we watch cartoons now?". Right now, I am enjoying that moment where they kind of know what I do, and their friends’ parents know who I am, but they also couldn’t care less. (Laughs)
John Powell: What are you looking forward to this season?
Arisa Cox: I am excited to see how this new crop of personalities are going to handle some of what Big Brother has up its sleeve - that is what is so exciting about the show.
John Powell: Every season, being a host and a fan, you must have your favourites. How do you as the host keep those emotions in check and remain objective?
Arisa Cox: It is because I am part of the team producing the show. So, I have the luxury of loving the series as a fan would but also because I work on the show I have an interest in treating all of the houseguests equally. I am so protective of the houseguests, each and every one of them, because I know how easy it is to make a mistake that you could be potentially dealing with for the rest of your life after the show. I lived on a reality television show myself for over a year, so I can really empathise with the houseguests in that way. I am constantly putting myself in their shoes and I understand how easy it is to make a mistake.
John Powell: What have you learned personally and professionally from participating in Big Brother?
Arisa Cox: That you can never predict human behaviour. It is really interesting watching from production’s perspective. Most of the time we are baffled and couldn’t have predicted the things that happen no matter how hard we try to. And we have those moments often on the show.
John Powell: What has been your favourite twist over the years?
Arisa Cox: That’s a really tough one. I loved the secret room, that was one of my favourites. One of my favourite episodes from last season was the triple eviction. And I also loved the secret have-not power from last season. I most love any time the fans can be involved - any type of Canada Votes I love.
John Powell: How hard is it to host the show in front of a live audience?
Arisa Cox: That actually is one of my favourite aspects of my job. I went to Earl Haig Junior Public School and the Claude Watson School for the Arts in Toronto, so I studied the arts for as long as I can remember. I didn’t know that training would play out in my life when I went off to journalism school at Carleton University in Ottawa, but I quickly learned while cutting my teeth in news that I wanted to stay in that sweet spot of arts and entertainment. That was a community that I understood.
John Powell: As a host, you are very personable, is that part of your approach with every show?
Arisa Cox: I feel like my goal is to be the surrogate for the audience and the fans. I am the one on the stage but I am also watching the show as a fan. For me, the most important thing is to be real. I want to be as authentic as possible because our viewers are very discerning and are very media savvy. If you give them fakery, they will see it and also call you on it. Me, I am so all in when it comes to Big Brother.
