'Abe's Exoddus' remake announced
Quote:
Oddworld Inhabitants has announced a new game, Oddworld: Soulstorm. A follow-up to 2014's Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty and a remake/reimagining of 1998's Abe's Exoddus, the new game will be released in the latter half of 2017.
Announced on the Oddworld website, Soulstorm will directly follow on from New 'n' Tasty, telling the story of hero Abe as he leads 300 Mudokons that he saved in the last game through the desert, before discovering the titular soft drink, which holds a very dark secret.
Abe's Exoddus followed a very similar story pattern, and had extremely similar gameplay mechanics to its own predecessor, Abe's Oddysee, but that may not necessarily be the case here - both the story and gameplay are being touted for a refresh by Oddworld Inhabitants.
In the game's announcement press release, series creator Lorne Lanning says that, "there was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell. Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle."
As for gameplay, the website also promises, "intelligent new mechanics, twisted new devices enabling highly explosive deviousness." Executive producer, Bernie Terry adds, "we’ve got some great surprises in store this time around we don’t think anybody’s going to predict."
What that means practically isn't known at this point. The game also hasn't been announced for any specific platforms as yet.
We gave Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty a glowing review, saying that it was "a beautiful remake that irons out nearly all of the problems and limitations of 1997’s Abe's Oddysee while bringing its best qualities to the fore." Here's hoping Soulstorm can do the same.
