I received an excellent education in one of the country's top rated Grammar Schools, but that was a long time ago and I am not 'up to speed' on some subjects now, including maths, and I have a mathematical problem which perplexes me. Perhaps one of you can help me solve it?
The National Housing Federation estimated 974,000 homes were needed between 2011 and 2014 but figures from 326 councils showed only 457,490 were built. 1.8million families are now on the waiting list on social housing - mostly British born. Nearly 470,000 of the 4million migrants who arrived in the between 2001 and 2011, were given council homes or allocated housing association properties. We have not enough homes to shelter our own people, yet 500,000 of the homes we DO have, have been allocated to immigrants while our own people wait for years in long queues. IT IS A PUZZLEMENT. It is a

The social housing issue really can't be lumped onto immigrants to be honest... My area has very low immigration (it's the sort of place where people still do a double-take if they see a black person) and the social housing situation is dire. 90% of it was snapped up in the early 90s and is now privately owned, and they aren't building more. Not just "not building enough" - they aren't building any at all. One would imagine that that is the main issue.

It also very much depends on where you live. A relative of mine recently got a council flat in Leeds and was only on the waiting list for around 4 months. A registered disabled friend of ours in Brighton has been on the waiting list for seven years and has given up all hope of ever being offered social housing. Fortunately for him, he has enough savings to remain in private rentals but the un-sureties of being turfed out because the landlord wants to sell makes his lifestyle uncertain and not being allowed to equip his rented lodgings with disability aids, compromises what he can and can't do.
