Whats everyone views on organ donation? Are you already on the register for donating organs once you have died? If you are, why? And if you aren't, why are you against it and how do you feel about it?

Ok, since no-one is answering, I'll answer it myself, haha.
I will not ever put my organs up for donation once I have died. I suppose this is hypocritical because if ever my family members were in need of an organ transplant I would hope that there would be one there for them. However, I don't like the idea of my body not being a whole once I have died. It feels weird to know that I will continue to exist (Even if it's just a Kidney) in someone that I've never known in my life and they wouldn't have known me. I donate blood, but it's completely different. With blood I can get it all back again, but I am still helping someone. However with organ donation I don't think the thought of it going to someone else. Even though I am going to get cremated aswell (and the organs will be destroyed regardless). |

Haha, loner Lauren.
I'll probably give mine up when I'm dead. Why would I need them? They could help another life live. Although, there is the thought of it going to a random stranger. |

Gosh, I'm glad there's people like you two in the world instead of people like me for if ever a member of my family needs an organ transplant, haha.
I believe in life after death as well though, so I would feel uncomfortable dying without the whole of me, because then I might not be able to pass into the next life, which would be a bugger to say the least. |

For me personally, I don't like the idea of my insides being taken out and given to others, but I feel that makes me selfish. I perceive death as being old-fashioned - if you die in a natural way, you're buried and then go to your grave. But thinking about it in perspective, it won't make as much of a difference, because of course people that drown, people who are cremated, people who are buried, burnt, trapped, whichever way - all of them die and I'd assume all are the same after death as well. So I can understand why people say once you've died, you've died - and so surely it's a good thing if you donate organs and allow more lives to be saved, depending on the way you died, when you're going to be needing no uses for them anyway.
It's just for me personally, I'm not so sure. I think it has something to do with a cultural and family thing as well; the way your family and ancestors have been buried - you tend to follow the example and keep the tradition going. |

If there is "life after death" why would you need your organs?

For me I would not feel complete going into the next life without the whole of my body (Even though I believe my body is just a mode of transport into the next life). It's like I am no longer what I was in the real world, and so it's not me. |

I guess that's true.
But isn't your soul you? Your spirit. That's the thing that takes you on to your next life. Your body's just a place for it stay ()? [/quote] Yes, that's how I perceive it as well. We all know it though - I mean, bacteria and parasites and stuff in the earth end up eating away at your body so in the end after many years you're left with no body and simply your skeleton! It's really the spirit that's 'you' but I can understand why some people would want to die the way they left the world, and allow nature to run its course on them rather than take organs out beforehand. |

But without the (full) body to go with me, It wouldn't be the way I lived in the real life - so it's not really me. I know what I mean, I just can't put it into words easily, haha. |

Yeah, but personally I wouldn't like to lay underground rotting away. I would rather have my organs used to help others, rather then them rotting away whilst people are dying because they need them. |

I've thought about this alot in the past and changed my mind a few times on whether or not I want my organs donated and come to the conclusion that I may aswell give my organs up for donation as even though the thought of being cut up when I'm dead is a little off putting for me but as it's giving someone else a chance of prolonging their life I think I'll put my feelings aside to help someone else rather than them just being in the ground and no use to anyone.

Will you consider cremation? I don't think I could think of being burnt. Even though I'll be dead. |

I would have said no but after watching a lot of hospital progammes I'd said yes. But omg the other day on Greys Anatomy you could donate skin and eyes which just creeped me out!

I am a registered organ donor, I would also like to give blood but have had a transfusion which rules me out for a while.
I am not sure if they would want my bits following my transfusion but they are welcome to them when I die. I doubt I will miss them terribly Seriously though I think that it is such a great thing to do. I know I often go through life looking at what I have achieved and sometimes it is easy to think well I have done nothing, BUT I know that I will always be able to do something for someone else when I die so makes my life less pointless |

I'm on the organ donor list. Why wouldn't I be? My organs are no use to me once I'm dead, but they might be able to help someone else. If I ever needed an organ, I would be eternally grateful to whoever had donated it.

I have also been looking at the web site to register as a bone marrow donor, there are so many people who could benefit from that. I have to see if I meet the acceptance criteria but none the less it is certainly worth a look at.
