Default Pet help please

Our family is in mourning, our last fish has died

We now need a new pet. Something quite cheap to maintain, and not destructive because we're out at work all day.

In the past we've had cats, dogs, fish, rats, mice, a hamster and a budgie.

We would be grateful for any ideas of what to get next

Sorry about the fish! Aquatic condolences, even if swimming around a tank is all you can bring to this world, you can still do it with style.

No matter what form it takes, loss is hard to bear, and that's why when my puddy tats are gone, they will not be replaced...............

On a brighter note, how about a tortoise? Low maintenance, sleeps through the winter, will probably outlive you, and, if Paul's right, will even withstand an attack by a hippopotamus!

Some pets just can't be replaced. Sometimes in my dreams my childhood dogs are still alive and I get all sniffly when I wake up and remember they've gone to doggy heaven.

My lifestyle doesn't suit having a dog or cat, and I'm likely to forget I'm looking after a lower maintenance animal, so I don't really know enough.

ROB - love your new avatar and did Paul really say that about a tortoise and hippos? I missed that one, yet it seems somewhat profetic given that less generous people on other boards have taken to referring to H as Hippo. Perhaps he has tortoise-like qualities and hence will be safe no matter how hard you try on our virtual outing.

Feefs, yes believe it or not Paul really did say that about a hippo and a tortoise and was convinced a tortoise would beat a hippo in a fight because of his shell until Dean pointed out that the hippo just had to tread on the shell and it would be curtains for the tortoise. Dear, dear Paul, bless him!!

Thanks for the suggestions guys

I'm tempted to go with a rat or mouse but my OH isn't impressed with that idea

I think we'll probably end up with a boring goldfish or something like that!

I'll let you know.

As Peachy has already confirmed, he did say that, bless him!

It was during the fire task. When Dean said 'Hippo treads on the tortoise, dude, it's OVER!'

Genial as ever, Paul laughed and said, 'Yeah, it is curtains, isn't it!'.

Just shows how bored they all were! In the end, at Stuart's suggestion, they decided only Sonic the hedgehog was truly invincible! Aaah, will we ever be privileged enough to witness such deep and thought provoking discussions again?

P. S. My money's still on the tortoise!

As you're out all day, I think you should stick to nice, easy to keep, goldfish. A pair would be nice. They'll be company for each other.

What about 2 gerbills? We had two and they were very entertaining to watch. Mind you, we did have one of those fancy cages with an upstairs and downstairs and things for them to play on.
