Default Burkinis banned on France's Cannes beaches by mayor

The mayor of Cannes has banned the wearing of burkinis - full-body swimsuits - on the beaches of the French Riviera resort famous for its annual film festival, officials said on Thursday.

Mayor David Lisnard signed off on the ruling that "access to beaches and for swimming is banned to anyone who does not have (bathing apparel) which respects good customs and secularism", which is a founding principle of the French republic.

"Beachwear which ostentatiously displays religious affiliation, when France and places of worship are currently the target of terrorist attacks, is liable to create risks of disrupting public order (crowds, scuffles etc) which it is necessary to prevent," it says.

Full burqa and niqab ban
France, since 2004
Belgium, since 2011
Chad, since 2015
Cameroon, in five provinces, since 2015
Diffa, Niger, since 2015
Brazaville, Congo, since 2015
Tessin, Switzerland, since 2016
Partial burqa and niqab ban
The Netherlands: women cannot have their faces covered in schools, hospital and on public transport
The Italian town of Novara: women were told to stop wearing a full veil in 2010, but there is no established fines system
Parts of Catalonia, Spain: The country's Supreme Court ruled against a ban in some areas in 2013, however those areas which brought their cases to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) have continued with the ban - supported by an ECHR ruling in their favour in 2014
Turkey: a full ban was abandoned in 2013. Now, women are only barred if they work in the judiciary, military and police

Nothing quite beats oppression like...uh...banning clothes that people choose to wear... after all...

Yeah sorry, no. Burkhas being banned was oppression, although they were able to spin it for security reasons. I'd like to know how they can spin this as being bad for security?

....... What may at first appear to be a Muslim lady in beachwear may upon closer inspection often turn out to be an explosive device constructed using spent nuclear material - a "dirty bomb" colloquially - with a face drawn on it. You can't be too careful, not with all of this immigration going on everywhere.

Bad move, people should be able to wear swimwear of their choice, I'd rather they banned men of a certain age wearing budgie smugglers if they are going down the banning route

I couldn't wear a tiny bikini in Saudi Arabia. No one's worrying about my oppression.

France is a secular country, they call the rules. You don't like it? There are plenty of Islamic countries that would welcome you in.

A hypocritical move, as long as their faces aren't covered I don't see the issue. It stinks of an attempt at 'revenge' for the attacks in all honesty. Blaming muslims in general for the actions of a very extreme minority.

why can't they just wear a wetsuit and a swim cap if they want? why are the muslims so intent on having a "burkini"? lots of fat people don't want to take of their shirts and they just wear a t-shirt while swimming, no big deal.

I think some muslims all try to dress alike because they know it intimidates some people, they want to segregate themselves, especially because the muslim men think the worst thing in the world is if a muslim girl meets a normal boy, and heaven forbid their daughters have a relationship with the french infidel scum, that would be the worst thing in the world.

The muslims are trying to paint it as bigotry against them when in fact it's THEIR bigotry of trying to segregate themselves from the french that is the real problem. Why are they so scared of muslim women having french men flirt with them? what is wrong with a french man appreciating and flirting with a muslim woman? nothing.

I definitely understand why the French are offended by a group of immigrants trying to segregate themselves from French society. if they are so offended by French society then why are they in France??

I'm not a fan of Islam but a part of me is irked when government tells citizens what they can or can't wear. This is the first time I have heard of "burkinis". My first reaction to it was to laugh. At least you can see her face. They might be useful for people with sensitive skin who don't want a tan.

..I've only ever seen one person wearing a burkini (I didn't know they were called that..) on the beach at Cannes and at it's busiest high season as well so this seems like an unnecessary thing to do..?...I mean quite a hostile thing against the Muslim community....

Yes it was to help "Sell them"
years back.

They can still be used on UK beaches
so they can sell in the UK and Arab nations
no trouble.

No Ammi
you are wrong
Evil Isis Terrorists have had many Machine Gun attacks
in France.

So I back this 100%

Also last year at the Film
Event in Cannes a Commercial Company used these clothes,
no more.

Obey the Law Of The Land
or Leave
I say.
