Troubled Britney Spears has tried to commit suicide, it was claimed today.

A US newspaper said the singers' meltdown is so severe she has actually attempted to take her own life.

She tried to walk in front of oncoming traffic and threatened to overdose on anti-depressant Xanax.

Her erratic behaviour has forced her family to put her on a suicide watch, the National Enquirer has reported.

A source told the paper Britney rowed with estranged husband Kevin Federline on Valentine's Day.

She had been hoping for a reconciliation but he said he wanted custody of Sean Preston, 17 months, and Jayden James, 5 months, and wanted a hair follicle from her for drug testing.

The source told the Enquirer: "Britney was crying and said she would kill herself if she lost the boys.

"She started pulling her hair and told Kevin she would cut it all off before anyone touched it."

The paper says despite the family immediately putting her under watch, the 25-year-old escaped and tried to walk in front of oncoming traffic.

Later she grabbed the bottle of Xanax and threatened to take the whole lot.

The source said: "Britney's family is terrified she'll end up like Anna Nicole Smith - on a cold slab in a morgue, leaving her young sons without a mother."

They added: "She's on the same self-destructive path."

Sporting an atrocious blonde wig and stroking a puppy, Britney Spears led more than 50 frenzied paparazzi on a wild car chase around Southern California yesterday afternoon.

After posing for shutterbugs in the passenger seat of a silver Mercedes on Sunset Blvd., Britney and her driver led the pack of photogs all the way to the beach, before pulling a U-turn and heading to the Bel Air Hotel. Confused, the photogs followed along, never losing a step.

As Britney arrived at the hotel, paps turned a nearby two-way street into a parking lot, as they flew out of their cars to try and get a shot of the rehab-hopping singer. Eventually, Brit's entourage ushered her into the building, where she stayed for the rest of the night.

I feel very sorry for Britney, she achieved success at such a young age. She has been trapped in a culture to which is volatile and cruel.

She now has a family, which I am sure she adores and would do anything for. These rumour of suicide attempts are just a way of belittling her and manipulating stories to make her look like a bad mother. Yes she has made some serious mistakes but who hasnt???? The fact that she is watched 24/7 is demonstrating that all people are human.

I think the fact that her husband is taking her for custody of her children is a joke. She is a mother who would do anything to keep her children. Maybe the fact that losing them has spiralled her into shear chaos

And her meltdown is so severe she even attempted suicide, according to shock reports in the States.

Just hours after shaving her head in front of stunned cameramen, the star is said to have tried to walk in front of a speeding car and threatened to take an overdose.

Britney, 25, hit the bottle in a bid to get over the blues caused by her marriage break-up. But pals say she has now sunk further into depression.

They claim the mixed-up Toxic singer has relied more and more on drugs and "happy pills" just to get through each day. As well as allegedly taking ecstasy and cocaine, they claim she has become hooked on the anxiety pill Xanax.

Worried friends decided to speak out, fearing she was putting her life at risk.

A source said: "Britney’s family is terrified she’ll end up like Anna Nicole Smith – on a cold slab in a morgue, leaving her sons without a mother.

"Britney is younger than Anna Nicole, but she seems to be on the same self-destructive path."

Brit sparked worldwide concern last weekend when, days after checking out of rehab, she decided on that head-shave in Tarzana, California.

Some Hollywood sources claimed she may have shed her locks in a bid to avoid having her hair drug-tested.

Friends from her school days have claimed she first flirted with drugs years ago in her home town of Kentwood, Louisiana.

Old pal Amanda Alexander, 21, claimed: "When I was around her she took ecstasy."

Amanda is the sister of Jason Alexander, 25, who was Britney’s husband for 55 hours after they wed in Las Vegas in 2004.

Another hometown friend, Kent Smith, alleged: "She does like to party. I’ve been there when ecstasy and cocaine were handed around."

According to reports in the US, Britney drifted back to booze and drugs when her marriage to Kevin Federline, 28, began to hit the rocks.

But it all reached a head last weekend. After the shock trip to the hairdressers it is claimed she tried to walk in front of oncoming traffic. Her staff managed to pull her to safety at the last minute.

A source said: "Britney later grabbed a bottle of Xanax and threatened to take the lot. She said she wanted to kill herself."

Her dad Jamie, 44, broke his silence last night to admit: "We’ve got a sick
little girl...we’re just trying to take care of her."

Speaking at his home in Kentwood, Jamie admitted the family were battling to persuade Britney to stay in rehab.

I wonder how the law works in the USA. I mean, as far as I'm aware, in the UK, if someone is a danger to themselves, they can be 'forced' to get help by the courts. Can't her family do something to help her? Can't they go to court to request that she be sectioned and treated? I know it's not the best plan in the world, but rather that than have her end up in the morgue.

It's such a tragic shame. She is just a young woman with 2 kids, and the media are having a field day with her troubles. It's just a pity that those who do care about her can't actually do anything to make sure she stays in the mental health facilities and gets the help she so badly needs.

Shes been in rehab for the last 2 days,and is undergoing a 35-45 day course.She will stay too,i just hope she can ignore the papz in the helecopters and hiding in the bushes.

It's disgraceful..the media want her to fail, or they would leave her alone. I suppose it's all part of being a celebrity, but I can't help but feel sorry for the stars when they are going through a personal crisis and the media practically stalks them!

Britneys Manager Speaks again on suicide rumours

Headlines exploded all over Friday, stating that pop princess Britney Spears was on suicide watch.

But now only "Extra" can reveal the truth behind the disturbing new Brit shocker. "Extra's" Jerry Penacoli got the answer straight from Britney's manager, Larry Rudolph.

"The story is absolutely untrue," he said. "She is in rehab, and it is very disappointing that various media outlets are running these false stories about her, as Britney tries to get better."

Spears has successfully completed two days in a row at the exclusive Promises rehab center in Malibu, after her mom dropped her off there Wednesday night.

Now "Extra" is uncovering new details about Britney's wild rampage just hours before going back to the rehab clinic.

The mother of two was wild eyed, desperate and out of control as she wielding an umbrella like a baseball bat and repeatedly struck a paparazzo's SUV.

Brit's blows were so forceful, dents were visible in the car. The photog also claims he was hit.

Spears' wild attack happened after her ex, Kevin Federline, refused to let her into his house.

"Extra" has also learned that Kevin called the cops to the house he is said to be staying with the kids just to rein in the shutterbugs.

We've also learned Federline has teamed up with former adversary, Britney's mom Lynne, who arrived at K-Fed's Tarzana home early Friday morning, shielding her face behind a hoodie.

As the world waits for Britney to find herself, is it true Barbara Walters will be the first to sit down for a one on one with the pop princess?

"Here's what I hope for Britney: that she helps herself. That's what is most important," Walters said. "After she does that, she has a long way to go before she sits down for an interview."

But Barbara told "Extra" she had no doubt Brit will bounce back: "She's so talented, she'll be back."

Barbara isn't the only one standing behind Britney during this troubled time; we've also learned that Elizabeth Arden, the beauty company behind Brit's line of fragrances, plans to support her as she tries to heal herself.

Staff at the Promises clinic, where Britney Spears checked herself into last month, has been put on a ‘suicide watch’, after the singer reportedly tried to hang herself with a bed sheet.

Britney had friends and family worried sick when paramedics were rushed to the clinic recently, and now a friend has revealed that medics were called because she tried to commit suicide.

Just before she tried to hang herself, the pal said, Britney wrote 666 on her shaved head, and ran around the clinic screaming "I am the Antichrist!"

"She is still very vulnerable. Last Saturday she said she had the number 666 written onto her bald head. She was crying, and shouting, ‘I am the Antichrist!' The clinic people just didn't know what to do. Then she started screaming, ‘I'm a fake! I'm a fake!' It must have been really frightening," the News of the World quoted the pal, as saying.

"Later that night she tried to kill herself. She attached a sheet to a light and tied it around her neck. Paramedics were called, but luckily she was unhurt," the pal added.

A source at the clinic also revealed to the paper that Britney had realised what a ‘rock’ her estranged hubby was, and that she not only wanted them to get back together, but also to have another baby.

"Britney has realised what a rock Kevin has been to her, and how out of control she has acted recently. She has been talking to Kevin every night for hours on the phone, telling him she still loves him. She just wants to be with him again, and thinks having another baby will seal their marriage," the source said.

The source insisted that the singer was also much happier and calmer than she was at the time she checked herself into the clinic.

"Britney seems much happier and has calmed down a lot. She's a completely different Britney from the beginning of the week," the source said.

Another source close to Britney said that the singer was now thinking about renewing her vows with K-Fed.

"Kevin has been a real tower of strength for her and she has finally decided to give their marriage another shot. She thought things were over between her and Kevin after his wild partying and gambling," the source said.

"She felt he had deserted her and left her to bring up their two children on her own. She never even dreamed she would take him back. But Kevin's like a different man now. He's never been so caring before, and is really worried about Britney.

"He's been Britney's rock during her difficult time, and she wants to give him another chance. This week she even asked if she could have a night away from the Promises Clinic with Kevin. She's still waiting to hear if they will give her a pass so that they can go out for a romantic meal together.

"Kevin has also taken their two little boys to see their mum in rehab," the source added.

Much to the dismay of her family, friends and fans, the singer’s life has been spiralling out of control ever since she dumped Federline last year.

Since then, she has been indulging in wild and boozy parties, been snapped without panties, and the latest shaving of her head and getting tattooed.

The singer also hopped in and out of rehab before seeking help for a third time when Federline threatened to take away their sons if she didn’t get professional help.
