'People's Bafta' nod for Brother

Celebrity Big Brother has been nominated for an audience award at this year's television Baftas.

The 2006 series, won by non-celebrity Chantelle Houghton, is on the shortlist alongside BBC shows Planet Earth, Dragons' Den and The Royle Family.

The Vicar of Dibley Christmas special and Life On Mars, the drama about a police officer who finds himself back in the 1970s, completes the nominees.

The Bafta TV awards take place at the London Palladium on 20 May.

Imagination

Members of the public were invited to suggest programmes from the beginning of this year, and will be able to vote for the winner at the www.obsessedwith.tv website.

BBC wildlife programme Planet Earth, fronted by Sir David Attenborough, is nominated for the second year in succession. Last year it lost out in the category to Doctor Who.

Series producer Alistair Fothergill said: "Planet Earth was a mammoth task for all of us. We are all delighted that the results of all our hard work seems to have really brought pleasure to so many people here in the UK."

The one-off special of comedy drama The Royle Family, which chronicled the final part of Nana's life, picked up three Baftas in 2000.

TV programmes eligible for the Pioneer Audience Award need to have been critically acclaimed and captured the imagination of the viewing public.
