Default Race row Shilpa to meet the Queen

From www.metro.co.uk

Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty will meet the Queen today and talk about her experiences of respect and understanding at a service marking Commonwealth Day.

The Indian actress, who was at the centre of a global race row during her time on Celebrity Big Brother, is to speak at the Westminster Abbey service.

She is one of five representatives chosen to share their own experiences of respect and understanding, the theme for this year's celebrations, and will also be presented to the Queen.

Shetty won the reality television show earlier this year amid a storm of protest at the way she was treated by fellow celebrities Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara.

Their remarks led to an unprecedented 45,000 complaints to media watchdog Ofcom but police have now said no further action will be taken.

Goody, who dubbed the actress "Shilpa Poppadom", has been vilified since she left the house, whereas Shetty was given a hero's welcome in Leicester, has met Tony Blair and last week attended Liz Hurley's wedding celebrations.

A former child soldier from Biafra, a nurse from Northern Ireland, a human rights activist from Fiji and a women's rights activist from Jamaica will also speak at the Observance service, where the Queen will also give an address.

More than 2,000 people are set to attend the multi-faith service, including the Commonwealth's Secretary-General, foreign dignitaries and about 1,000 young people from the UK.

The ceremony is an annual event to mark Commonwealth Day, which is always celebrated on the second Monday in March.

Nearly a third of the world's population are part of the Commonwealth, which has 53 member countries and is now an international partnership dedicated to co-operation and governed by mutual respect.

You have to be someone special to meet the Queen.

Shilpa Shetty must be special then?

I thought she was just a Bollywood Indian film actress who appeared in a Celebrity Big Brother show in January.

Am I missing something here?

Other than being my mum, my mum hasn't done anything that special, good things yes but special things no, and she went to the Queens garden party.

It's who you know that matters not what you do.

Shilpa Shetty obversely knows the right people at the moment and is part of the in crowd.

Good Luck to her.

From Sky News:

'It Comes From The Heart'
Updated: 14:15, Monday March 12, 2007

Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty has said she is glad the police are taking no further action over allegations of racism on Celebrity Big Brother.

The Indian actress, who was at the centre of a race row on the show, will be among the speakers at Westminster Abbey at a service marking Commonwealth Day.

She is one of five people chosen to share their own experiences of respect and understanding, the theme for this year's celebrations.

Shetty won the reality TV show amid a storm of protest at the way she was treated by fellow contestants Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara.

Their remarks led to an unprecedented 45,000 complaints to media watchdog Ofcom.

Speaking before today's service Shetty said: "I just want to move on. I'm glad they felt no charges should be put.

"I had to be responsible for my actions in the house. Other people were responsible for theirs.

"I just want to say it was a reality show. Too much was made of it."

She spoke of her pride at being asked to speak at the Commonwealth Day service.

"You can't really articulate this feeling. It's humbling. It's a huge honour. I feel elated they actually chose for me to come here and share my testimony.

"It's a huge responsibility. It comes from my heart.

"In India, in the UK, and the world over, we are constantly reminded that we have to cope with difference on a daily basis - but unless we do, we have no future."

She added that she was delighted to be meeting the Queen.

"It's a huge honour. It's a very emotional moment for me," she said.

"I'll have this huge smile on my face and I'll do my curtsey."

In her own address, the Queen will stress the importance of respect and understanding between different communities.

More than 2,000 people are set to attend the multi-faith service, including the Commonwealth's Secretary-General and foreign dignitaries.

The service is held every year to mark Commonwealth Day, which is always celebrated on the second Monday in March.

Nearly a third of the world's population are part of the Commonwealth, which has 53 member countries.

I'm over Shila. Does anyone remember after Chantelle won CBB everyone said she'd make billions and then she dissapeared. It looks like the same thing is happening to Shilpa...thank God!
