Default Roma v Man U crowd trouble

Anyone see the crowd trouble between Roma and Man United? the Italian police are a total disgrace, they seem to think that hitting out at people like they were stops the trouble when infact all it does is make things worse, as for hitting women and little kids thats just bang out of order, as usual the English will get the blame though.

Yeah i did it was caused by the Roma fans taunting our fans when they scored and the police just battered our fans and the Roma fans got away with it was quite brutal and unfair, United fans had to stay an extra 90 minutes after the game aswell.

Yeah something has to be done, its about time us english fans were fairly treated for once because its usually always us who get the blame and dont get me wrong i accept that some United fans were causing trouble and looking for a fight so to speak but that doesnt give the Italian police the right to start whacking anyone in view, bang out of order.

Totally agree with you there, the United fans didn't even start the fights it was the Roma fans i feel sorry for the people who got a battering for nothing, i can only see people being put off going to european games which is a big shame.

from www.metro.co.uk

At least seven Manchester United fans were injured after 'all hell broke loose' during their Champions League match with Roma last night.

Violence flared when opposing fans taunted each other following a Roma goal by banging the partition and throwing bottles at each other.

Italian police clad in riot gear moved into the crowd where two St George's flags were seen, and hit fans with batons. Supporters responded by throwing seats at police, witnesses said.

One fan was seen lying in the stands with blood over his face.

BBC Five Live commentator Alan Green, who witnessed the trouble, said: 'United fans appeared to charge the police and the police went in.

'It got pretty vicious. It is very, very nasty inside this ground now.' A Manchester United fan said: 'The police got involved with a baton charge and all hell broke loose. You had seats being thrown at the police.

'Most of the missiles being thrown are bottles which are being sold inside the ground.

'The number of riot police has probably tripled. You really don't know what is going to happen next.'

Before the game, held in Rome, around 300 English fans faced off with local supporters in skirmishes on the way to the Olympic Stadium.

Tensions were high following a violence warning that United issued to the 4,500 English fans travelling to the game – a warning some Italians saw as inflammatory.

The alert, posted on United's website earlier this week, instructed fans to avoid parts of the city and not to use the metro because 'there is a real danger of being attacked by the “Ultra” fans of AS Roma'.

The game finished 2-1 to Roma. The violence is the second time this season United fans have been involved in clashes with police in Europe.

In January, fans who travelled to watch United play Lille at the Stade Felix-Bollaert stadium in France were beaten after climbing out of overcrowded fenced-in stands, claiming they feared a Hillsborough-type disaster.

French police hit them with batons, used tear gas and arrested nine, claiming they were 'uncontrolled'.

And from bbc.co.uk

Eleven Manchester United fans were taken to hospital after violence erupted around their match against Roma, the British Embassy has said.
United fans clashed with baton-wielding police inside Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

The British Embassy said the United fans had been taken to hospital, with two reportedly kept there overnight. Two Roma supporters also had treatment.

Uefa has announced it will launch an investigation into the crowd trouble involving many fans from both sides.

Manchester United warned fans before the game they could be attacked by Roma supporters, sparking criticism from Rome's mayor.

Local media also reported that five people were injured in clashes as fans made their way to the stadium.

It was reported that three were English, one was from Rome and another was from Italy's security forces.

The trouble reportedly occurred near two bridges - the Ponte Milvio and the Ponte Duca d'Aosta.

During the game, which Roma won 2-1, both sets of fans could be seen throwing missiles at each other.

There was four or five police and they were coming towards me and my husband with the helmets and their batons

The two sets of supporters were separated in one section of the ground by a barrier with riot police gathered on the Manchester United side.

After each goal both sets of fans surged towards the barrier.

At one stage, riot police with shields and batons were seen repeatedly striking Manchester United supporters.

One female fan was seen being pushed in the face by a police officer while another supporter was repeatedly struck with a baton as he lay on the floor.

TV pictures showed one Manchester United fan with blood pouring from his face as others tried to pick him up.

A Manchester United fan, David Pearce, said: "Italian police attacked the Manchester United crowd. I tried to help a girl who'd fallen down and one of the policemen hit me with a baton.

"It's absolute pandemonium. It's just terrible."

Around 5,000 United fans had bought tickets for the game but a further 1,000 were expected to travel without tickets.

William Gaillard, from Uefa, said the body was very concerned at the number of violent incidents so far this year.

Manchester United fans were warned of attack by Roma fans

"We are in an emergency situation and we feel that it's definitely very sad to see these scenes in European football this season.

"We will be waiting for the delegate's report, and the control and disciplinary body will be looking at the television images to see the dynamics of what actually happened."

Before the game Manchester United fans were warned in letters and on the club's website to avoid certain areas of the city as they could be attacked by Roma's hardcore 'ultra' fans.

They were warned to avoid using Rome's underground network to reach the Stadio Olimpico, and to also keep away from the Ponte-nenni bridge and the Campo de Fiori.

The city's mayor Walter Veltroni criticised Manchester United officials and said the advice could create a "negative climate".

Italian football has a reputation for violence among its fans.

In February the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) suspended all matches after a policeman was killed at a Serie A game between Catania and Palermo.

Three Middlesbrough fans were stabbed and 10 others hurt during fights with Roma fans at an Uefa Cup quarter-final last year.

No doubt the riot police will say Utd fans started attacking us, but the pictures show everyone that Utd fans were going back to their seats and still getting attacked, and a viewer emailed your on sky sports last night saying there were people badly injured and the police were just sending them back to their seats it's a disgrace.

Its obvious what the Italian police are going to say 'we were just doing our job' which in my opinion is a complete load of rubbish, the way they were hitting the United fans was basically as if they were a supporter, disgraceful.

Yeah it was terrible, most of the United fans were hoping to enjoy the game but how can they when the riot police are whacking them basically if a United was standing he was causing trouble and would get whacked.

Also there was crowd problems at the Spurs game last night, several Spurs fans were taken to hospital 1 fan broke his wrist.

It's getting a bit outta hand with the riot police. The british fans should boycott the away games. Let's see how they like it when they lose half the gate money.

Yeah, better to boycott than risk a kicking though, isn't it? Especially if you are there with your kids.
