Monarch flights cancelled as airline ceases trading
Monarch Airlines has ceased trading and its 300,000 future bookings for flights and holidays have been cancelled, the Civil Aviation Authority has said.
About 110,000 customers are currently overseas and the government has asked the CAA to charter more than 30 aircraft to bring them back to the UK.
Monarch is the UK's fifth biggest airline and the country's largest ever to go into administration.
Customers due to fly from the UK have been told not to go to the airport.

Monarch had been in last-ditch talks with the CAA about renewing its licence to sell package holidays.
It had until midnight on Sunday to reach a deal with the aviation authority but failed to do so.

Customers in the UK yet to travel: Don't go to the airport
Customers abroad: Everyone due to fly in the next fortnight will be brought back to the UK at no cost to them. There is no need to cut short a stay
Customers currently overseas should check monarch.caa.co.uk for confirmation of their new flight details - which will be available a minimum of 48 hours in advance of their original departure time

The CAA said the situation was "unprecedented", but the 110,000 customers currently overseas would be returned home at no additional cost to them.
Dame Deirdre Hutton, chairwoman of the authority, said passengers from as far away as Tel Aviv would require repatriation and that two "rescue flights" from Ibiza had already taken off.
She asked passengers for patience, saying the CAA was having to effectively create one of the UK's largest airlines overnight, adding: "It is a huge undertaking."
The CAA said the "vast majority" of customers due to fly on Monday would return by the end of the day.
'Hugely distressing'
Andrew Haines, chief executive of the CAA, said the "scale" of the operation means "some disruption is inevitable".
He added: "We ask customers to bear with us as we work around the clock to bring everyone home."
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said he had ordered "the country's biggest ever peacetime repatriation".
"This is a hugely distressing situation for British holidaymakers abroad - and my first priority is to help them get back to the UK."
However, the government has warned passengers to expect disruption and delay as it works to ensure there are enough flights to return the "huge number" of passengers.

Had a holiday in 5 weeks booked through monarch website so thats cancelled
And a holiday in January booked through travel agent site so thankfully that can be sorted out

I feel sorry for the people going on holiday today to find out it’s cancelled and the stagg

I was shocked and sad waking up to hear it, didnt know what was going to happen and but thankfullg both are being sorted which isn’t ideal because we have to pay for another holiday and put it back when we eventually get the refund.

Most people seem to like monarch and its a good airline so its shocking. Ryanair is probably next which would not be shocking as monarch. The staff </3 losing their jobs like that.

although its a shame, i would much rather they go out of business than take short cuts on safety. It's a hugely competitive industry, so any failure, even amongst the big players is not unlikely.

Personally, I think the watch dogs should be looking very carefully at Ryan air, as that guy is a nutter and wouldn't think twice about compromising safety if it kept his airline in business.

Ryanair would be much more shocking, they are a much bigger player and have multitude more destinations, Monarch were purely sun holidays, and lost Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey

I don't think so travelled Ryanair many times and this time a lot of their planes are new, compromising on safety is a sure way to go out of business.

well its down to losing a lot of their market in areas that are now considered more or less no go.

don't know Jetw just expanded into Stansted last year, also we don't know how the number of flights compare to Monarch, do Jet 2 have daily flights into destinations while I believe Monarch only operated on certain days into some airports, its not really easy to compare the two unless you compared their flight schedules, it can't be denied Monarch were heavily reliant on sunshine holidays rather than city breaks. I would never have thought of checking Monarch if I was taking a City break would you?

Yes I would I specifically stated that it was low cost airlines that were potentially in jeopardy, can an airline sustain itself with city breaks?

Monarch was actually my favourite airline and I'm devastated about what's happened. Though it has affected my Grandparents who were supposed to be heading off to Portugal from Leeds Bradford airport but the flight was obviously cancelled and they've had to find a new one and cancel everything and ring the hotel saying they will be there a bit later, it's caused such a nightmare for everyone in my family trying to figure something out. My mum sorted it out though since she's a travel agent.

Ryanair and Easyjet seem to do it...its ther bread and butter i would omagine

They knew on Saturday that this was going to happen and they still try to get people to book a holiday over the weekend.
