Default E.R.

Since there isn't an "official" E.R. thread at TiBB for C4 fans of the show, I thought it was about time there was. I love E.R., and I am so surprised it has survived this long.

Anyway, the season finale will be on Monday 18h June, at 10.00pm on Channel 4. In USA, a 14th series has been commissioned for September 2007, so we can post updates from there.

I realised it too. I'll post the ratings for C4 when after the series finale. All I can say now is that ratings are much lower than they used to be, getting under 2 million.

It's gone down since Carter left..

Nah, seriously, I love this show. I remember watching the pilot episode all those years ago, on Sky One if I remember correctly. It's quite weird looking at old episodes now, cuz the E.R. has changed so much over the years.

So, yeah, I'm up for an E.R. discussion.

E.R is OK. I watch most of the time, but I just find it hard to get into.

It's weird, cuz I watched the first 6 or 8 seasons, then stopped watching.

Then, I got back into it about Season 11 or something. I felt like I couldn't possibly catch up, but I'm back into the swing of it now, and if they refer back to something that I maybe missed, I can always google it so find out..

BTW.. I literally just posted here, and then it was halfway down the page. This place is mental tonight!!!

Well, I was too young at the time of the first season, so I only started watching it in 2001. It was excellent then, but I was peeved when Carter left.
I don't really watch it nowadays, well, as much as I used to, because it isn't something that is a must-see anymore.

It certainly hasn't got the same impact that it did back at the beginning, but it has done well to last this many seasons. Not many dramas do nowadays. I just wonder how much longer it can go. Can they keep it fresh and still pull in enough viewers?

I'm not sure. The viewing figures might not ever recover, and, to some extent, ER should have ended in 2004, like Friends, otherwise it would just get too plain and stale, which is sad to be honest.
Maybe it should be put on at Friday Nights at 9pm instead of Monday.

Here is what is to come in the next episode:

[spoil]Luka, Abby, Pratt, Morris and the team treat the victims of collision between a big-rig and family car, including the wife of the truck driver and the son of the car’s driver. Sam celebrates her birthday in the ER as she cares for a photographer who changes her outlook on life. Neela and Ray share some subtle signals, but what’s up? Gates is shadowed by a medical student who notices his errors. Wedding plans continue as Luka and Abby try to decide where to be married, but someone else is handling the bachelor party.[/spoil]

I don't think it will ever get it's "prime time" slot like it used to, but it's ticking over. I'm not sure how the viewing figures are in the states. There's a lot of competition over there.

How old are you Matthew if you don't mind me asking? I was 20 when ER first aired. I'd just got married and moved into my own place. That's why I can remember the pilot... cuz I'm ancient..

I was about 5 when it first came out. I never knew it had a prime time slot though. I first saw it on E4 in 2001, then on C4. Its first episode got 4 million, I think, I still got between 2 million and 4 million each episode. Moving it to either 9pm or E4 permenantely might be a good move for ratings.

The recent chopping and changing with days and channels puts people off as well. I don't watch all that many shows, so it doesn't bother me too much if my show changes days, but for people who maybe watch other things on that night it can become a hassle, and then they just don't bother to watch it or tape it.

They need to find a timeslot and a channel and stick with it. Amazingly there are still a lot of people who don't have E4 though, so I would say using C4 would be the best option for viewing figures.

I used to love E.R. Every Wednesday at 9pm I would be glued to it, but like most of these shows, the great characters leave and new ones arrive.

I hardly know anyone now. I stopped watching it after Dr Mark Greene left.

Good point, but having ER on both C4 and E4 is also a good ratings move to. See what happened to Friends. When it was originally on Channel 4, it wouldn't get very good ratings, between 1 million to 2 million. When it went to Sky One, it got roughly the same figures, but because it is a digital channel, those are very good ratings.
In 2001, when C4 bought rights for Friends and ER, a new channel, E4, was launched for a younger age group, with more features. This is why, most of the time, Friends and ER were only put on C4 after it was shown on E4, so that another audience would get more out of it, so when it would go terrestrial, it would get good ratings (Friends between 3 million and 5 million, ER between 2 million and 4 million).

Obviously now, ER has run its course, but is still a winner for E4. It would be good if there would be an Ugly Betty/ER double-team on Thursday nights on E4.

Seeing as Wednesday Nights at 9pm did so well, I think it should return then, because of less competition and more people are available.
But this leaves Big Brother. So, Big Brother will be shown at 8.00pm, which can do very well and put damage on other shows and soaps, ER at 9pm and Desperate Housewives at 10pm.
