What does it mean for Sky?

In the UK, Fox is in the midst of a bid to buy the part of the broadcaster Sky that it doesn't already own. That bid is being investigated by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which is due to publish provisional findings in January.

The BBC understands that the Disney deal will not alter that CMA investigation.

If the Sky purchase is approved, that deal would probably go through before the Disney purchase of Fox assets. So the whole of Sky would then be likely to transfer to Disney's ownership.

If not, then just the 39% of Sky currently in Fox's stable passes to Disney.

Rupert Murdoch said: "If things go wrong, the existing [Sky] shares go to Disney. It will be up to them to decide what to do."

Either way Sky's future will lie primarily in Disney's hands.

I read before that this deal might put Sky News future in doubt because (I think) it loses money, and Disney are not really in the news business - aside from ABC in America.

Disney are incredibly image conscience, so i'm not sure things like Sky Atlantic or Sky News will be a good fit in its portfolio

It's only when it comes to the Disney Brand itself, you could technically call the Kill Bill films Disney films as they were released by Miramax when Disney owned them.

You'll never see anything rated higher than a 12A released on the Disney Brand but they do own other studios that release less Disney friendly content. I don't think ownership of Sky Atlantic or Sky News would hurt them.

I'm not surprised really, in fact the Disney purchase of Fox could be seen as an indication that they're branching out in terms of the content they want to make and that may even be a part of their motivation for buying. There was at one point (the 2000's mainly) an idea that the best way to maximise movie revenue was to make absolutely everything PG-13 at most to maximise potential audience but it's kind of been proven not to be the case in recent years. For example, Terminators 1 and 2 having a massive following but everything since being trash - but now they're bringing back Cameron / Arnie / Linda Hamilton to semi-reboot (hitting rewind up until the end of T2) to make a "proper" R-rated sequel.

I think basically, similar to gaming, the "blockbuster loving generations" now contain a lot of adults who are keen to see films made FOR adults in the cinema... it's seen as a marketing tool in many cases rather than how it was being viewed at one point (as an audience barrier).

Disney have been slowly edging this way for a while really, it's definitely not all animated bunnies even at this point, it makes sense as the next step in evolving into having all sorts of media and target audiences catered to.

The R rating (in the US) does reduce box office though, like with Blade Runner 2049 this year. Generally the budgets given to them are lower, because the audience that can see them is more limited. A lot of adults don't have time to go to the cinema, unless it is to take their children to a family-friendly film, hence children's animations being such a big deal now for film-companies.

Sometimes you get a breakout horror film that does well, and also R-rated comedies can do well.

Yes, but that thinking lead them to start making PG-13 sequels / remakes of classic R-rated properties thinking that it was a recipe for success... but the vast majority of the time, the films (deservedly) get panned by audiences and critics. I think they've started to accept that if you want to make a critically acclaimed sequel to a classic R-rated franchise... you have to make it for adults.

It's part of 21st Century Fox, controlled by the Murdochs, but they would keep it (and the Fox local US channels) if the rest of the company is sold to Disney or Comcast. I'm not sure the deal would be allowed to go through otherwise.
