THE famous Big Brother eye logo holds the key to a sensational new time-travel twist planned for the new series.

Two versions of the eye have been revealed by Channel 4 - one in black and white, the other in multi-coloured.

And insiders say it is no coincidence that it bears a striking resemblance to the test card seen in hit series Life On Mars.

Half the housemates are set to take a trip back in time, just like detective Sam Tyler in the BBC sci-fi drama.

But while Tyler, played by John Simm, 36, found himself in the 1970s, housemates will be transported back to the frugal 50s.

Half of the contestants will be sent to live in a drab terrace house, where they will have to survive without any mod cons.

A show source said: "It's like Life On Mars. Some of the housemates will have to life like post-War Brits, and eviction will be their only means of escape."

They will have to survive on basic 50s rations, with just a small hob to cook on. There will be no fridge-freezer, no vacuum cleaner and only a tin bath to wash in.

All they will have for amusement will be toys of the era, such as skipping ropes and hula-hoops.

Meanwhile, the rest of the contestants will be living in modern luxury.

Big Brother is due to begin on Wednesday, May 30. The following Friday, Davina McCall, 38, will host a double live show - the first at 8.30pm, the second at 10.30pm.

This has sparked speculation that bosses might stage a shock eviction.
