Default Sugary Drink Tax - Another Government Scam

The tax on 'Sugary Drinks' is just yet another 'Stealth Revenue-Raising' ploy by the Government.

Any 'Tax' on the manufacturers will - OBVIOUSLY - be passed on by them to the consumer, thus hiking up the prices of most soft drinks by 8p per can.

The 'motive' of a drive to 'better health' is pure B.S. because if that WAS the Government's REAL reason then they could have LEGISLATED to force manufacturers to limit the amount of sugar that they put in drinks.

DITTO cigarette and Tobacco tax hikes.

(And NO, I do not drink any 'fizzy' drinks)

I've always thought that carrots work better than sticks, and giving tax relief/price incentives would be a better way to encourage healthy eating.

Quite a few manufacturers have decreased the sugar in their drinks, so it appears to be working already.

Neither would work really to change eating habits imo. Produce here is already inexpensive for example. They're targeting the sugary drinks because sugary anything is very addictive, they sell in high numbers and hence more tax $$$. Kind of like they taxed/increased the price of cigarettes here (at least 2x, sometimes 3x depending on the state), and there are still people who go through packs a day...

great idea, we have high tax on other products that have an adverse effect on health... this is another diabetes is a massive problem in the UK and the cost of treatment must recouped from somewhere. If that is the problem it must also be the solution.

It does affect behaviour in the short term, but only the short term, so after that it is a revenue generating scheme. I don't have a problem with things like this. Money has to be raised one way or another.

Then just tax incentives for companies promoting healthy foods/making the recipes healthier.
