Alcoholics could be given Flu jabs costing the NHS £90 per jab in preference to Old Age Pensioners under proposals put forward by Sunderland City Council and Sunderland University.
There is a World-Wide shortage of the vaccines but officials reason that hospital beds are being taken up by alcoholics who are succumbing to pneumonia because alcohol suppresses the immune system, and the North East is a notorious blackspot for the number of registered alcoholics. Every year the NHS vaccinate two million OAP's against pneumonia but last year thousands of OAP's missed out on having the jab. Last night campaigners slammed the proposal. Joyce Robins of 'Patient Concern said: "It's not fair because these people choose to pour alcohol down their throats. I'm not against them having the vaccine but they should not be able to deprive other people of it. What do you think? Is it Right or Wrong?
