Crystal meth: Britain's deadliest drug problem

Britain is under threat from a highly addictive drug, known as crystal meth or "ice", which has the potential to rival crack cocaine as the country's most dangerous drug, police chiefs are warning.

And The stimulant, methamphetamine, also known as "Nazi crank", has begun to spread throughout the UK and is available in almost every city in Britain, according to police intelligence. It is becoming increasingly popular among clubbers and is starting to enter mainstream drug use.

Police chiefs have been alarmed by its rapid growth in the United States - where 12 million people are thought to have tried it - Australia and New Zealand, and fear that Britain will be next.

The growth in British laboratories making the drug puts people at risk of death or injury from explosions and toxic fumes, a police conference will hear today.

While the number of seizures of the drug are currently low, police are starting to uncover a growing number of makeshift laboratories manufacturing it. Last month a crystal meth factory was discovered on an industrial unit in a Derbyshire village, Stoney Middleton. Laboratories have also been found in London and the Isle of Wight.

The threat posed by crystal meth, a synthetic drug that can be smoked, swallowed, snorted or injected, will be highlighted at the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) drugs conference in Manchester today.

Commander Simon Bray, an Acpo spokesman, said: "It could become as popular as crack unless we recognise the potential danger is poses and take action to prevent its spread. There is increasing intelligence about methamphetamine which shows its presence in this country is growing. You can find it in Hampshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, London - in almost every county. If people want to get hold of the drug they can find it."

He added: "We have not had many incidents yet, but if you look at the experience in the United States, New Zealand and Australia it started out with one or two laboratories which rapidly turned to hundreds. It is a bit like crack cocaine which suddenly appeared to take off - we want to make sure it does not get to that stage."

The number of illegal laboratories producing it grew in the US from 3,800 in 1998 to 8,500 in 2001, peaking at 10,200 in 2003. An estimated 12.3 million Americans had tried the drug by 2003. It is now more popular than cocaine or heroin in parts of America, and is considered by some to be more dangerous.

The American singer Rufus Wainwight is among several celebrities who have admitted overcoming an addiction to crystal meth, which increases sexual arousal.

Earlier this year the United Nations drug control agency warned that crystal meth was becoming a global problem and called for tougher restrictions on chemicals used to make it.

Police intelligence has shown that although still relatively rare in the UK, the drug is becoming increasingly popular among clubbers, and is being used by heroin addicts and rough sleepers.

Police are also concerned that the manufacture of the drug - the chemicals and instructions on how to use them are readily available on the internet - will lead to deaths and injuries from explosions and poisonous fumes produced during the cooking process. Mr Bray said: "The chemicals used to make the drug include iodine and drain cleaner - the substances are akin to nerve agents. They can result in explosions and toxic waste.

"In America quite a lot of children have been affected by the chemicals, and anyone responding to an incident [such as a fire] can be in danger. It can take months to decontaminate a site."

A gram of meth costs about £50, enough for several "hits". Its effects include psychosis and paranoia, and it has a particularly addictive nature that can be compared to crack cocaine and heroin.

The police believe that as well as being manufactured in Britain it is also being imported into the UK by a Filipino criminal network.

The police and Home Office are so concerned about the potential growth in the drug that in January they are due to upgrade the drug from a Class B to a Class A substance. This would mean those caught dealing it could receive a life sentence while those in possession could face up to seven years.

Key facts
by Geneviève Roberts

* Crystal meth (methamphetamine) is a class A drug, reclassified from class B in June this year.

* When smoked, snorted or injected it gives a "rush" similar to that produced by crack cocaine and is highly addictive.

* 10 per cent of gay men in London have used crystal meth. In London, half a gram costs £25.

* It causes cardiovascular problems and increased blood pressure. An overdose can cause overheating and convulsions.

I see how something may have slipped the "comedians" minds.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Britain is under threat from a highly addictive drug, known as crystal meth or "ice", which has the potential to rival crack cocaine as the country's most dangerous drug, police chiefs are warning.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

When a girl of 18 is offered "crystal meth" and get's hooked on it and as a result ends up in "intensive care" in a hospital, as she has let this drug rule her life.

The girl's mother & father will be worried for their daughter's life and well-being.

This is a terrible drug and it is more readily available than you think.

The article speaks for itself.

"Crack Cocaine" was the most dangerous drug, now it has been rivaled by "Crystal Methodone".

IT KILLS.....

But if members want to joke about it????

Here's a poem about Crystal Meth I found online once... it's interesting reading...

"I AM METH"

I destroy homes, I tear families apart,
I take your children, and that's just the start.

I'm more costly than diamonds, more precious than gold,
The sorrow I bring is a sight to behold.

If you need me, remember I'm easily found,
I live all around you - in schools and in town

I live with the rich, I live with the poor,
I live down the street, and maybe next door.

I'm made in a lab, but not like you think,
I can be made under the kitchen sink.

In your child's closet, and even in the woods,
If this scares you to death, well it certainly should.

I have many names, but there's one you know best,
I'm sure you've heard of me, my name is crystal meth.

My power is awesome, try me you'll see,
But if you do, you may never break free.

Just try me once and I might let you go,
But try me twice, and I'll own your soul.

When I possess you, you'll steal and you'll lie,
You do what you have to — just to get high.

The crimes you'll commit for my narcotic charms
Will be worth the pleasure you'll feel in your arms.

You'll lie to your mother, you'll steal from your dad,
When you see their tears, you should feel sad.

But you'll forget your morals and how you were raised,
I'll be your conscience, I'll teach you my ways.

I take kids from parents, and parents from kids,
I turn people from God, and separate friends.

I'll take everything from you, your looks and your pride,
I'll be with you always — right by your side.

You'll give up everything - your family, your home,
Your friends, your money, then you'll be alone.

I'll take and take, till you have nothing more to give,
When I'm finished with you, you'll be lucky to live.

If you try me be warned - this is no game,
If given the chance, I'll drive you insane.

I'll ravish your body, I'll control your mind,
I'll own you completely, your soul will be mine.

The nightmares I'll give you while lying in bed,
The voices you'll hear, from inside your head.

The sweats, the shakes, the visions you'll see,
I want you to know, these are all gifts from me.

But then it's too late, and you'll know in your heart,
That you are mine, and we shall not part.

You'll regret that you tried me, they always do,
But you came to me, not I to you.

You knew this would happen, many times you were told,
But you challenged my power, and chose to be bold.

You could have said no, and just walked away,
If you could live that day over, now what would you say?

I'll be your master, you will be my slave,
I'll even go with you, when you go to your grave.

Now that you have met me, what will you do?
Will you try me or not? It's all up to you.

I can bring you more misery than words can tell,
Come take my hand, let me lead you to hell.

Don't take then you will not get hooked, simple as.If people are stupid enough to take it in the first place they only have themselves to blame, just say no.

I have never taken any drugs in my life, as it just didn't appeal to me ever.

But as this is a drug with a new name to some, many easily lead people may think to themselves:-

"Okay, I'll try some? I might get high??"

Most people think of "Heroin" & "Coke" & "Crack"

But, "Crystal Meth" is something far more sinister now and it is everwhere and so bad, it is untrue...

Well then they are either stupid or very weak minded, either way there should be no excuse or even reason for them to take it, drugs are bad full stop and anyone can realize it, if they do end up addicted and/or ill then there can be no apologists for it, I'm tired of people feeling sorry for drug users who end up messed up through their own stupidity.

Well, at least it has been reclassified from a Class B to a Class A That might make a few dealers think a little more?

But I am not expecting too much confidence in either dealers or customers. But I can expect it to be high-lighted more & more as time goes by.

To be fair it should be class A. It is a very dangerous drug. My point was that it has been about for years and is nothing new.

This vid shows the physical affects of Meth use. The last one is the worse and is no laughing mater.

Oh my god..... I have seen that sort of thing before but never so many back to back.

Nodis, I know that its a bad bad drug, but everyone has the choice when they first have it in their hand to say no.

I am not whiter than white, I had an addition to a class A drug but I changed my life around before it really took hold of me and I got the hell out. I made my life better and ran from the old habbits.

What I am trying to say is that people have the choice to say NO thank you!

The problem with Chrystal Meth is that its easy to make and therefore take it floods into areas and is very very adictive and harmful

But I rather would

Crystal Meths is very real and a lot of people actually don't know what it is exactly.

You can mention these drugs:-

Heroin
Coke
Crack cocaine
Cannibis
Ecstasy
Speed

But there is still many, many, many who don't know or understand this drug.

Information is everything and if I have chosen to point it out in the Serious Debate's section of this forum, then I would certainly place (Crystal Meths as serious)

It is right that people have their own choices to make in life and it is like "Smoking". Every packet of fags you buy says that Smoking Kills, but how many do it anyway.

But Crystal Meths is very new to some people and many will say, "What's that?"

Their friends will say how good it is and why not try it out.

That is where "naivety" and "lack of information" on what can happen to you, as a result of taking something which is VERY addictive and you will get hooked very easily.

I have also said it should be class A as it is nasty. I was offered meth 10 years ago and said no as I did with Ketamine (sp) and E 15 years ago. Did do a lot of speed and LSD at the time. Why? It was fun. There is no point denying that fact. People take drugs as it makes you feel good. (at first) The simple fact is some people have a predilection towards trying drugs and some don't. I did have but like Kizwiz realised where it was taking me and stopped before I went to far.

I am not saying education is a bad thing but as you say people still smoke when they know it will kill them. Same goes with drugs i am afraid. Some people will always try drugs as it is in their make up to try stuff.

The poem I posted was supposedly written by an addict, but that was proven to be a hoax. Still, I thought it was rather good, and obviously quite accurate as well.

I fail to see how you could think I was telling a joke...

Edit to add - Here is the snopes page with the hoax information on it:

Doc, I watched ur youtube vid with the faces, and it's pretty shocking. Some of them are only months later as well. There are a lot of other informative ones on youtube but they aren't for the faint hearted.

That poem gave me goosebumps, and cuts to the chase of this whole messy business. Looking at the very first lines, and assuming it wasn't written by an addict ,I would say it looks like a family member who has experienced this close up and lost everything from it. I hate to think of the variety of these brain drugs which are being developed and becoming more and more available.
