Arrow Buffy's back! (Slayers Audio Drama out this week)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting the reboot treatment.

20th Century Fox Television, who produced the original Joss Whedon drama, have put a new take on the beloved Sarah Michelle Gellar drama in development. Writer Monica Breen, who worked with Whedon on ABC's Agents of SHIELD, has been hired to pen the adaptation and serve as showrunner on the reboot.

Whedon will be an exec producer on the series and has been working with Breen on the script, which features a black actress stepping into the role of Buffy made famous by Gellar.

Gail Berman, Joe Earley, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui (who produced Whedon's original Buffy film that inspired the TV series) will also serve as exec producers on the potential series. A network is not yet attached for the new Buffy, talks for which began last fall. Producers Fox 21 TV Studios will pitch the Buffy re-do to streaming and cable outlets later this summer in a package bound to ignite a bidding war. It's unclear if Whedon will have any additional role on the new Buffy due to his other commitments, which include HBO's recent straight-to-series order The Nevers.

Talks for a new Buffy began last fall. A decision to move forward was determined after Breen was identified as the right writer for the reboot. A script or director has not yet been determined. Casting for the central role of Buffy has also not yet been determined. The new version, sources say, will be contemporary and build on the mythology of the original. Like today's world, the new Buffy will be richly diverse, with some aspects of the series, like the flagship, seen as metaphors for issues facing society today.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons on The WB Network (which evolved to become The CW) and UPN. The series continued in comic book form after completing its run in 2003. Buffy was based on the feature film of the same name that starred Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry that was originally penned by Whedon.

The cult favorite series became a breakout and helped turn Whedon into a household name, while also launching the careers of the series' stars (including David Boreanaz and Alyson Hannigan) and writers (including Jane Espenson and Marti Noxon). Buffy ranks as one of the greatest TV series of all time and has been hailed for the way in which Whedon and the writers challenged gender norms and portrayed Buffy (Gellar) as a feminist hero.

Yeah, it would have worked better if it was a sequel like "______ the Vampire Slayer"

I would rather a respectful sequel with Gellar possibly returning as a Giles type helper as possibly a guest star to pass the baton.

There is only one Buffy and it is Sarah Michelle.

This is great news! Buffy was one of my favourite shows of all time so it would be great to get some new material. It’s encouraging that Joss is involved and some of the original writers and producers, without that I wouldn’t watch. I only have a couple of concerns. One is that Sarah Michelle IS Buffy, so to call this new actress Buffy is wrong. Maybe just call the show ‘The Vampire Slayer’. Have it like Doctor Who and James Bond where the actor who plays the vampire slayer can change without having to cancel the show. My other concern is that Buffy was such a 90’s show, it is difficult to see how it would have the same charm in the modern world. After seeing the AWFUL ‘Charmed’ remake with the awful writing and acting I do worry that this could go the same way, but like I say if Joss is involved it shouldn’t do.

Can they not?

First charmed and now this. They should have done a different show instead of trying to ruin buffy because sarah will always be buffy in our hearts and can’t be replaced

Yeah I can't see it working , why can't they leave classic shows alone .

The original TV series was a bit of a cult classic, they should just leave it alone tbh. They've already ruined enough 80/90's movies by remaking them. I never understand why they remake things that were actually popular anyway. I mean why not go back to some that was a good idea but was made badly and try and make it a hit?

As long as the talent is there, it'll work out fine.

A lot of the metaphors in the original series are still relevant today and if they keep to that style then it should work out. If they lose that social commentary though, it'll just be another Supernatural and that's just not needed.

Yeah, it's like what they did with Point Break, they replaced the charm of the characters and their relationship with bigger stunts and effects which was a big mistake because that was what actually made the original so well loved

New show set in the same shared universe with guest appearance from old cast, **** yes.

Reboot / remake... **** no.

Imagine the former. It could be so good. Willow turning up all super powerful... Giles popping his cheeky face in for a gander... Poor old Nick Brendon laying off the sauce long enough to do a guest stint. Maybe even closure on wtf happened at the end of Angel.

It has an easy setup too, with how Buffy ended (loads of slayers being activated). Just have it be about how most slayers are off doing world saving stuff or tackling the problems in big cities, but this one is stuck at a school in a crappy "normal" small town with no other slayers anywhere nearby... And then it turns out the town is riddled with vampires. Buffy and Faith show up in the final couple of episodes of season one but then Newbie the Vampire Slayer sorts out the big bad and they're like "she is teh new chosen one of crappytown" and leave her to it.

Instant hit .

Apprehensively perched. I agree that the idea of a sequel seems better but if they execute it well it could be great.

Lol they're backpedalling already;

https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/7/2...en-joss-whedon

She seems to be trying now to say that it was always going to be a totally new Slayer and not a recasting of the original Buffy... though this is IMO bull**** as there has been a huge online backlash. So it sounds like they've heeded the signs and now decided to go in a different direction.

Ew, it's gross they gave into backlash just because they wanted to cast a black actress.

They should have stuck to their guns tbh.

I hope this means we can get cameos of old cast members, that's pretty much the only reason I didn't want a flat out reboot.

To be fair I don't think it really had anything to do with them wanting to cast a black actress... there would have been a backlash against a full reboot even if they were casting someone who looks exactly like SMG.

I mean in another 10/20 years, maybe, but it only ended in 2003... I think TV shows need longer than that before being remade.

I'd even accept "dialogue cameos" really... e.g. mentioning characters / events from Buffy and Angel (who at this point would be "legendary" in the demon fighting world).

Or maybe they could get Andrew as a new watcher, as Giles was training him in that (really ****ing weird) S5 episode of Angel set in Italy.
