Default Nasa announces crews for their first commercial space flights

NASA announces the crew members for the first flights of the new spaceships built by Boeing and SpaceX, when manned spaceflights will be launched from America for the first time since 2011.

Quote:
NASA’s Commercial Crew Program Target Test Flight Dates

The next generation of American spacecraft and rockets that will launch astronauts to the International Space Station are nearing the final stages of development and evaluation.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program will return human spaceflight launches to U.S. soil, providing safe, reliable and cost-effective access to low-Earth orbit on systems that meet our safety and mission requirements. To meet NASA’s requirements, the commercial providers must demonstrate that their systems are ready to begin regular flights to the space station.

Two of those demonstrations are uncrewed flight tests, known as Orbital Flight Test for Boeing, and Demo-1 for SpaceX. After the uncrewed flight tests, both companies will execute a flight test with crew prior to being certified by NASA for crew rotation missions. The following schedule reflects the most recent publicly releasable dates for both providers.

Targeted Test Flight Dates:
Boeing Orbital Flight Test (uncrewed): late 2018 / early 2019
Boeing Crew Flight Test (crewed): mid-2019
SpaceX Demo-1 (uncrewed): November 2018
SpaceX Demo-2 (crewed): April 2019

It takes a lot of guts to fly experimental flights like this, I think.

I'll say. I remember being in class in grade 4 and watching the 1986 challenger explode live. Not that technology isn't advanced by now... but still... they are never sure

...what a way to go though eh, James...I think I would consider it and it’s not because I have guts or anything...but what’s the worst that could happen..being gone in a split second..?...and that doesn’t feel that ‘worst’ to me in comparison to the experience...well, I’m assuming it would be a split second or a quick thing...if not then no, no way...

...this though might be a huge problem and deciding factor for me if I was offered to be part of the experimental flight...

When you start to think about space and try to get your head around it's size and time in space it's really something incredible and makes my head hurt.

...I think what’s also incredible, Sheriff...is the communication links through that vast space of the modern day...when we think about the delays in satellite links to far off earth places only a few years ago...the reality of back in the day would have been something like...

‘ Ground control to Major Tom’

(35yrs or so later)

‘Come in ground control, I’m hearing you, this is Major Tom’

...or some such thing...definately all whirling head stuff...
