The internet was way better before social as far as individuality... more people had personal sites, image galleries were a very big thing, people hosted their own content... but social site takes precedent over the creator of content now, cut it into itty bitty "digestable" junks and then blend it all up in a stew of
Meh...
That's the downside of so much diversity of opinion, content, comments all concentrated in one single spot... nothing really stands out then... it took the best of the internet, watered it down and made hyper-commercialization the primary focus
Ironically, it has made individualy expression secondary as those sites are the "wrapper" for content-wise and get to choose how/when/where it's displayed... I don't miss <MARQUEE>You must have Internet Explorer 6 to enjoy this site</MARQUEE>, but it was so much nicer when most folk maintained their own islands via their own hosting... our "usernames" weren't just some registered name in a CMS... they were often in the titlename of their own site and that often resonated with their content...
So yeah, I think being anonymous is well and good, but we maybe went a little bit further than intended with the collectivism/Likes Vs Shares, etc while the internet progressively has made each of us more faceless... rather than just simply discrete...
