Default Netflix raises prices for millions of UK customers...

Online streaming service Netflix (NFLX) said it is increasing prices for most of its 13 million UK customers, with its standard plan rising to £9.99 ($13.54) a month.

The provider's standard plan will go up 11% from its current £8.99 a month fee.

Netflix's premium plan, which lets subscribers view programmes on four different screens simultaneously as well as watch in HD and Ultra HD where available, will jump from £11.99 to £13.99.

Its basic plan customers (one-screen and non-HD) won't see their bills rise and they will continue to pay £5.99.

Netflix said it started notifying customers on 1 January, and all of its UK users will be contacted in the next couple of months.

The company said the price hikes are essential to reflect the “significant investments” it has made in new TV shows and films.

Customers will be given a month's notice before the price rise kicks in. Those who don’t want to pay the higher prices can cancel their subscription without incurring any penalty.

It does make you wonder if there'll ever be a cap. But consumerism will still allow it to fester, people will still fork out for Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Now TV, Britbox, Amazon Prime, and god knows what else and we'll still all be expected to accept that one cable package is apparently no longer allowed...

2 quid increase is a bit steep for the privilege of 4k. For obvious reasons the new content from netflix has been a bit naff this year, so they could have held the increase back i feel

I agree, the lack of heavy hitters because of Covid means it's a questionable time to be increasing fees. I'm fine with paying more for content with genuinely increased quality, but my question right now would be... Where is it?

It also annoys me somewhat that they seem to pump huge portions of their budget into "star power" - hiring well known faces who no doubt command a large fee, rather than putting the money into writing, locations and effects budgets.

I've watched several Netflix original movies where I've thought it was a decent enough film... But could have done with more spent on certain post-production bits... And it's has a Hollywood face in the central role when the film would have been just as good (occasionally better) with a less well known lead.

Also... Literally 3/4 of the Netflix content I've really enjoyed this year has been foreign language series... And you can tell straight away that those have a lower budget. Yet are often FAR better written and more enjoyable.

Can't say I've heard of it - but I did enjoy "Into The Night" which is also Belgian . Really silly premise and clearly low budget (80% of it is shot onboard a plane) but highly entertaining... like a cross between "EastEnders" and "Speed" but on a passenger jet. Amazing really.

Apparently it is an actual plane, too... they bought an old passenger jet to film on rather than building a set. Got to love some authenticity (though I imagine it was simply cheaper )

Netflix do need to be careful, Disney+ will start breathing down it's neck once it can get a regular slate of original content going and Disney+ costs the same per month as Netflix's base package without the same limitations.

If Netflix keeps hiking the prices up, people will start to look elsewhere, because these days, people have options.

Indeed, especially with stuff for adult audiences coming with the new "Star" thing. Although apparently they will be bumping up the price a bit when that comes.

I've started to learn Spanish for basically this reason.

I loved a film called The Occupant, though it was comical when the heavy American accents were saying the Spanish names in the dub

I'd been umm-ing and arr-ing about getting rid of it for ages. I mainly use Prime, Iplayer, ITVHub and All4. Netflix just made the decision for me. Cancelled.

I don't need it. I got plenty to watch on my Virgin TV service.

call me basic how many times you want, but it still makes me happy

as for new content, my expectations for this year are below zero, due to the pandemic i can easily understand it is harder to make and release new movies

which is why i like how they've added some older movies (Karate Kid, Spiderman, Hulk) in return

It feels like they’re taking advantage of the fact we’re in a pandemic and more people are at home watching Netflix, I haven’t read the article so I could be wrong. Hopefully the extra money will be going to good use
