The top comment from the article (with nearly 11,000 votes!)

When I was a child, nearly 70 years ago, I was sent home from school with a booklet of distressing photos of children in "poor" countries where famine, poverty, and lack of medical care were serious issues. I was supposed to sell those photos to friends and neighbours for a specified small sum and take the money back to school to be sent off for the charity to help these people. I see the photos here, and images on TV of starving children, and poverty today in these countries. Nothing much has changed in over 70 years. These are not poor countries, some of the richest peple in the world live in them. This problem is the responsibility of their governments who do little or nothing to address the issues. I am not without compassion, and no one can deny this should not be happening, anywhere, but this problem is obviously self-perpetuating and will not be solved unless seriously tackled at the source.

another angle is that the government of these countries get the aid and then divert it for their own political purposes. To continue receiving this aid, they need to have poor and starving to get that money.

After decades of assistance, there is no excuse for the pictures we see

It's OK in a couple of years people will be sending aid here instead.

What a bigot.

I doubt he's ever seen anything Stacey Dooley has done before.

What's the message here? I think it's the same message that Robert Mugabe sent us, while he own country sank into the mire... Keep your pink noses out of it. I am happy to oblige.

No... we get black bigots like David Lammy, telling us we're disgusting colonials.

I could edit a video that just consists of desperate children in need living in poverty in this country and ask people to donate and it would persuade them. Whilst people do live in poverty and are famined and dying there's always an angle to everything. It happens in EVERY. SINGLE. COUNTRY. In the world, so why are we so focused on Africa? If it's because of colonial guilt, why aren't we having more campaigns to help people in India and the Caribbean? Whilst money has helped some people and may have saved lives, the fact is not everyone can be saved and Britain is not some saviour of the poor people of the world. What would make a better difference is if these countries could run themselves properly. But then going back to my earlier point, we are supposed to be a 'good' and 'rich' country but people have to resort to receiving food aid in the form of food banks. We know people in America are impoverished, but we would not start an aid campaign for the people of America would we, because we assume that the government there would use money to actually help people in need.

Have to say I've been impressed with what I've seen Stacey do so far, not seen the comic relief stuff though.

Whenever I see a story about Lammy, it always has something to do with race and identity, always!

I think he's right.

The way the films are made rob the people of their dignity in order to make a shocking and emotionally manipulative ploy for donations and these films become more about how the celebrities react to the situation rather than the situation itself. Like Lammy said, the celebs undoubtedly have good intentions but the whole presentation of it is unsavoury.

I like the idea of an african team making these films instead and presenting an authentic image of the plight people face without robbing them of their dignity.

I understand his point but it's such a weird horse to flog.

But I am sick of Stacey Dooley's whiny, doe-eyed face and voice so I am going to stand with him anyway. Such a precocious, boring woman.

I don't really see the problem with what they do. You could compare it with the photo of princess diane in Africa with that child...Both women are making, or made a difference..maybe more black celebs should take up the opportunities given to themm

Oh god i can remember those little books with pictures of childrens faces and the tear half off and donate, every kid in my school took a book home and we all hoped we would sell every picture hoping we were helping the children.

How things change , we were trying to give though even though most people in my street never even had a fridge.

This is a great alternative that I'd never have considered.

To me it's undeniable that these white rich celebs swooping in does say 'white saviour'. It's no disrespect to these celebs who do have the best intentions; it's just a fact.

There does need to be more education about these countries.

I’ve always hated when super rich celebrities tell me to donate money tbh.
