A governor of the NHS trust which runs England’s only gender clinic for children has quit amid claims youngsters are being rushed into transitioning without being given enough guidance.

Marcus Evans, who had worked at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust for more than 30 years, said he has serious concerns about ‘what is going on in the gender identity world’.

His decision to quit followed a damning internal report which claimed that the trust’s Gender Identity Development Service, an NHS service, was ‘not fit for purpose’.

A letter has been signed by 25 other clinicians at the trust who are upset at how the concerns raised in the report have been handled.


Marcus gave a very thoughtful interview on radio this morning basically saying children are waiting so long to be referred to the Tavistock they are immediately rushed onto hormone blocker without proper assessments and a decent period of evaluation. Staff at the Tavistock on a recent Panaroma programme refused to be on camera for fear of being labelled transphobic but there are concerns among many of the staff that the service is not fit for purpose and that there aren't any long term studies done on the long term effect of hormone blockers. He said many parents who brought their children to the Tavistock had the same concerns about their children being rushed into the process and there had been a 400 per cent increase in referrals in the past 5 years
