[The U-turn could jeopardise Boris Johnson’s target
to roll out full fibre broadband to the entire country by 2025. BT chief executive Philip Jansen said yesterday it could take ten years to strip out Huawei’s equipment from UK networks. He also warned of ‘outages’ and possible security risks if the sector was told to curtail all business with the Chinese technology firm during the 5G network upgrade] [Ministers are braced for backlash from Beijing when they confirm today that Huawei is banned from involvement in UK's 5G network Telecoms firms to be banned on installing new equipment supplied by Huawei Huawei executives held talks with officials in the hope of watering down plans BT boss says it could take ten years to strip Huawei equipment from UK networks] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...G-network.html Was debated on on NewsnightHD BBC2 So once dates are given to rip it out. I would rather have a slower network than one operated by a hostile foreign power. Stopping roll out of that equipment is the correct decision

I'm not bothered about 5g, 4g is ample for handheld devices and full-wired connections will ALWAYS be better in the home. 5g can beat home broadband "raw download speeds", sometimes by a large margin, but it is nowhere near to matching ping speeds (responsiveness) or network stability which is (in my opinion) far more important than speed. They should be focussing on rolling out full fibre-to-the-door so that we can have ultra-fast wired home broadband .
Howefferrrrrrrr the Huawei issue is a thinly-veiled US trade sanction on China. It is economic/political and has absolutely nothing to do with data security, much like the whole "TikTok is steal ur data!!" tinfoil hat nonsense. |

We're headed into a sanctions war and probably an ensuing cold war with China riding the wake of the US at the moment. Hopefully just a cold war. Scarier things going on than Covid, folks.

[Huawei 5G kit must be removed from UK by 2027
The UK's mobile providers are being banned from buying new Huawei 5G equipment after 31 December, and they must also remove all the Chinese firm's 5G kit from their networks by 2027. Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden told the House of Commons of the decision. It follows sanctions imposed by Washington, which claims the firm poses a national security threat - something Huawei denies. Mr Dowden said the move would delay the country's 5G rollout by a year. "This has not been an easy decision, but it is the right one for the UK telecoms networks, for our national security and our economy, both now and indeed in the long run," he said.] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-53403793 Huawei blocked: Tech must be stripped from UK's 5G network by 2027 https://news.sky.com/story/huawei-bl...-2027-12028177 Last edited by arista; 14-07-2020 at 12:12 PM. |

It's just the start, the US intends to gradually erode and economically destroy China over time. Tech industries are an easy sell for a first step because the general public (and plenty of politicians) are easily rattled by the idea of "scary hacker stuff!!" so will justify it on those grounds. It'll progress from there and, because China is wholly reliant on international trade for basic sustenance, they will use their military might against nearest-neighbours to ensure that their own people are fed. This will be branded an act of unwarranted aggression in the West and used to justify full isolation of China - and I can't see that going anywhere other than a full scale conflict.
Things like pandemics and economic disruption lead to war. It's tried-and-tested global history. |

the usa sanctions meant that Hauwei couldn't use the chipset on their hardware that was agreed. That makes a big difference, because if its cheap chips of chinese design then they could easily be vulnerable. Once America turns the screw, they make it impossible for other nations not to tow the line. I think though that after Hong Kong, the UK changed it's stance significantly
