However it would depend on the person really. I'd prefer a fun sort of date as a good ice breaker rather than the serious type.

I would agree the cinema is somewhere you go when you know someone and are comfortable to sit side by side saying nada for 3 hours

I would say a quick drink or dinner at a stretch to test the waters if you don't know them that well, at least you can make your excuses and go if its not going well
